Bandura et al.’s (1961) Bobo doll experiment is one of the most famous studies in psychology. After children watched adults treat an inflatable doll either aggressively or non-aggressively, they were taken into a room containing the same doll. The children who had observed the aggressive model displayed significantly more imitative aggression. The study provided key evidence for social learning theory, showing that aggression can be learned through observation and imitation, and exam questions often probe its contribution to the nature-nurture debate and its ethical controversies.

Pepperberg (1987) spent years training an African grey parrot named Alex to investigate whether animals can understand and use language. This study challenged the traditional view that only humans possess language, and exam questions often probe its sample size, ecological validity, and its use of the operant conditioning technique of shaping.

Piliavin et al. (1969) moved the research setting onto New York subway trains. Researchers staged a confederate who collapsed or appeared ill, and observed whether and how quickly real passengers offered help. The results showed that in the vast majority of trials passengers did offer help, and did so quickly, challenging the traditional assumption of bystander apathy. This field experiment is famous for its high ecological validity, but also faces ethical criticism for studying participants without their knowledge or consent.

Almost every question on Paper 1 (Approaches, Issues and Debates) falls into one of three cognitive levels: describe, evaluate, and apply. Describe questions ask you to accurately recount the background, method, results, and conclusion of a core study. Evaluate questions ask you to point out the study’s strengths and weaknesses. Apply questions ask you to transfer approach knowledge to a completely new scenario. Understanding these three levels is the first step in structuring your answers.

The key to describe questions is completeness and precision. Using Canli et al. as an example, a high-scoring describe answer should cover four elements: the aim (to examine the relationship between emotional intensity and amygdala activation), the method (a laboratory experiment using fMRI scans), the main results (higher arousal led to higher amygdala activation), and the conclusion (emotion enhances memory encoding). Writing only “this was a study about memory” earns minimal credit because it lacks the specific methodological details.

The biggest mistake in evaluate questions is producing a bland list of one strength and one weakness. Examiners want to see you point out an issue and explain why it is an issue. For example, when criticising Milgram’s study for lacking ecological validity, you should not just write “the laboratory is artificial”, but go further and explain that the shock scenario differs greatly from everyday obedience situations, so the findings may not generalise to the real world. This “point plus explanation” structure is what separates top answers from average ones.

Apply questions test flexible transfer of knowledge. The question typically presents a fictional scenario, such as “a teacher wants to use rewards to encourage students to hand in homework on time”, and asks you to use the learning approach or a specific core study to explain or design a solution. When answering, first state clearly which approach and concept you are using (such as positive reinforcement in operant conditioning), then map that concept point by point onto the details of the scenario, and finally state the expected outcome. This turns abstract approach knowledge into a markable, actionable answer.
七、Paper 2 研究方法:实验设计与数据分析要点 | Paper 2 Research Methods: Experimental Design and Data Analysis Essentials
Paper 2(Research Methods)是许多学生最容易失分的一张试卷,因为它考察的不再是学派知识,而是”如何做研究”。你需要熟练掌握实验设计、变量控制、抽样方法、信度与效度、伦理规范,以及数据的描述统计与图形呈现。这些内容虽然看似琐碎,但每一个概念都对应着明确的得分点。
Paper 2 (Research Methods) is the paper where many students lose the most marks, because it no longer tests approach knowledge but rather “how to do research”. You need to master experimental design, control of variables, sampling methods, reliability and validity, ethical guidelines, and descriptive statistics and graphical presentation of data. Although these topics may seem piecemeal, every concept maps onto a clear marking point.

Experimental design is a high-frequency topic, and the three basic designs must be memorised: independent groups, repeated measures, and matched pairs. You need to be able to state the strengths and weaknesses of each. Independent groups avoid order effects but require more participants and cannot control individual differences; repeated measures use fewer participants and control individual differences but are prone to order effects. Questions often ask you to choose the most suitable design for a research scenario and justify your choice.

Control of variables is equally examinable. The independent variable (IV) is what the researcher manipulates, the dependent variable (DV) is what is measured, and a confounding variable is an extra factor that could distort the results. The key is not how fast you calculate, but why you chose a particular statistic. For example, when data contain outliers, the median is a better measure of typical value than the mean. Combining statistical knowledge with the specific data context is the correct way to earn marks.

CIE Psychology marking follows a clear set of level descriptors, usually awarding marks across two dimensions: knowledge and understanding, and evaluation and application. Low-scoring answers are characterised by “listing facts without explanation”, while high-scoring answers are characterised by “every fact being used to support a clear judgement”. Understanding this helps you direct your revision effort toward explanation rather than rote memorisation.

Only then does your evaluation show analytical depth and reach the higher mark bands.
