📚 KS3 CIE Word Equations: Answers | KS3 CIE
Word equations are a simple way to describe chemical reactions using the names of substances. This revision guide gives you clear answers, worked examples and common CIE KS3 question styles so you can check your understanding and improve your exam answers.
1. What Is a Word Equation? |
A word equation is a summary of a chemical reaction. It uses the names of the chemicals instead of formulas or symbols.
In every word equation, the starting chemicals are called reactants. The chemicals made at the end are called products.
The reactants are written on the left of an arrow, and the products are written on the right. The arrow means reacts to form or produces.
Example: copper + oxygen → copper oxide. Reactants: copper and oxygen. Product: copper oxide.
2. Key Rules for Writing Word Equations |
Always use chemical names in word equations, not symbols such as Cu or O₂, unless the question asks for a symbol equation.
Write the reactants before the arrow. If there are two reactants, separate them with a plus sign. Do the same for two or more products.
Keep the same names on both sides of the arrow. Do not try to balance a word equation by changing a name or adding numbers.
Example: hydrogen + chlorine → hydrogen chloride. The plus sign separates the reactants, and the arrow shows the direction of change.
3. Common Word Equations with Answers |
Below are common CIE KS3 word equations. Check each answer and practise writing it from memory until you can recall it quickly.
