The Heating Curve of Water: Mark Scheme Essentials | 水的加热曲线:评分标准要点

📚 The Heating Curve of Water: Mark Scheme Essentials | 水的加热曲线:评分标准要点

The heating curve of water is one of the most commonly assessed graph skills in KS3 CIE science. It shows what happens to the temperature of ice as it is heated steadily until it becomes water vapour. Mark schemes reward precise labels, correct use of melting point and boiling point, and clear particle explanations for the flat sections.

水的加热曲线是 KS3 CIE 科学中最常考查的图像技能之一。它显示冰在持续加热直至变成水蒸气的过程中温度的变化。评分标准重视准确标注、正确使用熔点和沸点,以及对平台段的清晰粒子解释。

1. Heating Curve Overview | 加热曲线概述

A heating curve is a graph of temperature against time or heat energy supplied while a substance is heated at a steady rate. For water, the curve begins below 0 °C, rises to 0 °C, stays flat while ice melts, rises again to 100 °C, stays flat while water boils, and then rises above 100 °C as steam warms.

加热曲线是以温度对时间或供给的热量作图,表示物质在稳定加热过程中温度变化的图像。对水来说,曲线从 0 °C 以下开始,升高到 0 °C,在冰熔化时保持平台,再升高到 100 °C,在水沸腾时保持平台,之后水蒸气继续升温超过 100 °C。

The two flat sections are the most important parts of the graph. They show that during a change of state, the temperature does not rise even though heating continues. Students often lose marks by suggesting that heating stops during these flat sections.

两个平台段是图像最重要的部分。它们表明在物态变化过程中,即使继续加热,温度也不会升高。学生常因为误认为平台段停止加热而失分。

ice (solid) → water (liquid) → steam (gas)

2. The Three States of Water | 水的三种状态

Water exists in three states: solid ice, liquid water, and gaseous water vapour. In the solid state, particles are closely packed in a regular pattern and can only vibrate in fixed positions. In the liquid state, particles are still close but can move past each other. In the gas state, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions.

水以三种状态存在:固态的冰、液态的水和气态的水蒸气。固态时,粒子紧密排列成规则结构,只能在固定位置振动。液态时,粒子仍然接近,但可以相互滑动。气态时,粒子相距很远,向各个方向快速运动。

The heating curve shows the transitions between these states. Melting is the change from solid to liquid. Boiling is the change from liquid to gas. The reverse changes are freezing and condensing.

加热曲线展示这些状态之间的转变。熔化是从固态变为液态。沸腾是从液态变为气态。相反的过程是凝固和凝结。

Mark schemes expect students to use the correct scientific words: melting, boiling, freezing, condensing, evaporation, and state change. Using everyday words like melting away or disappearing may lose accuracy marks.

评分标准要求学生使用正确的科学术语:熔化、沸腾、凝固、凝结、蒸发和物态变化。使用日常用语如“化掉”或“消失”可能会丢失准确性分数。

3. Reading the Temperature–Time Graph | 读懂温度–时间图像

The vertical axis shows temperature in degrees Celsius, written as °C. The horizontal axis usually shows time in minutes or heat energy supplied. Mark schemes award marks for labelling both axes correctly and including units.

纵轴表示摄氏温度,写作 °C。横轴通常表示时间(分钟)或供给的热量。评分标准会给正确标注两个坐标轴并写出单位打满分。

A well-drawn heating curve for water has three sloping sections and two flat sections. The first sloping section shows solid ice warming up. The first flat section shows ice melting at 0 °C. The second sloping section shows liquid water warming up. The second flat section shows water boiling at 100 °C. The final sloping section shows steam warming above 100 °C.

一条绘制良好的水的加热曲线有三个倾斜段和两个平台段。第一个倾斜段表示固态冰升温。第一个平台段表示冰在 0 °C 熔化。第二个倾斜段表示液态水升温。第二个平台段表示水在 100 °C 沸腾。最后一个倾斜段表示水蒸气在 100 °C 以上升温。

When describing the graph, avoid saying the line goes up or the line goes flat without linking it to a state. Use sentences like: The temperature of the ice increases until it reaches 0 °C; then it remains constant while the ice melts.

描述图像时,不要只说“线上升”或“线变平”而不联系物态。应使用这样的句子:冰的温度升高到 0 °C;然后冰熔化时温度保持不变。

4. The Melting Plateau at 0 °C | 0 °C 时的熔化平台

At standard atmospheric pressure, pure ice melts at 0 °C. On the heating curve, this appears as a flat horizontal line at 0 °C. The temperature does not increase until all the ice has melted.

在标准大气压下,纯冰在 0 °C 时熔化。在加热曲线上,这表现为 0 °C 处的一条水平平台线。直到所有冰都熔化,温度才会上升。

During melting, energy from the heater is still being absorbed by the ice-water mixture. The temperature stays constant because the energy is used to overcome the forces holding the water particles in the solid lattice. It is not used to make the particles move faster.

熔化过程中,冰水混合物仍然从加热器吸收能量。温度保持恒定,因为能量用于克服将水粒子固定在固体晶格中的作用力。它没有用来使粒子运动得更快。

A key mark scheme point is that the average kinetic energy of the particles does not increase during melting. Since temperature is a measure of average kinetic energy, the temperature remains unchanged. The added energy increases the potential energy of the particles as they move apart.

一个关键的评分点是熔化期间粒子的平均动能没有增加。由于温度是平均动能的量度,温度保持不变。增加的能量增加了粒子分开时的势能。

melting point of pure water = 0 °C at 1 atm

5. The Boiling Plateau at 100 °C | 100 °C 时的沸腾平台

At standard atmospheric pressure, pure water boils at 100 °C. The heating curve shows a second flat section at 100 °C. During this time, liquid water changes into water vapour, but the temperature stays at 100 °C.

在标准大气压下,纯水在 100 °C 时沸腾。加热曲线在 100 °C 处显示第二个平台段。在此期间,液态水变成水蒸气,但温度保持在 100 °C。

Boiling occurs throughout the liquid, with bubbles of vapour forming inside the water and rising to the surface. This is different from evaporation, which happens only at the surface and at temperatures below the boiling point.

沸腾发生在整个液体内部,水蒸气气泡在液体内部形成并上升到表面。这与蒸发不同,蒸发只发生在液体表面,并且在低于沸点的温度下进行。

The energy supplied during boiling is used to separate the liquid particles completely so they can move freely as a gas. The temperature does not rise because the average kinetic energy of the particles does not increase during this change of state.

沸腾时供给的能量用于将液体粒子完全分开,使它们能够作为气体自由运动。温度不升高,因为物态变化期间粒子的平均动能没有增加。

boiling point of pure water = 100 °C at 1 atm

6. Sloping Sections and Kinetic Energy | 倾斜段与动能

In the sloping sections of the heating curve, only one state is present. When ice is heated below 0 °C, the added energy makes the water particles vibrate faster in their fixed positions. This increases their average kinetic energy, so the temperature rises.

在加热曲线的倾斜段中,只有一种物态存在。当冰在 0 °C 以下被加热时,增加的能量使水粒子在固定位置上振动得更快。这增加了它们的平均动能,因此温度升高。

When liquid water is heated between 0 °C and 100 °C, the particles move past each other more quickly. The temperature rises because the average kinetic energy of the particles increases. The same happens when steam is heated above 100 °C.

当液态水在 0 °C 与 100 °C 之间被加热时,粒子相互滑动得更快。温度升高是因为粒子的平均动能增加了。水蒸气在 100 °C 以上加热时也是如此。

The gradients of the sloping sections may be different. Liquid water needs more energy to raise its temperature by 1 °C than ice or steam, so its temperature rises more slowly. This can lead to a shallower slope for the liquid section, but the exact numerical comparison is not always required at KS3.

各倾斜段的斜率可能不同。液态水每升高 1 °C 需要的能量比冰或水蒸气多,因此它的温度上升得较慢。这可能导致液态段斜率较平缓,但 KS3 阶段不总是要求精确数值比较。

temperature ∝ average kinetic energy of particles

7. Plateaus and Potential Energy | 平台段与势能

During the flat sections of the heating curve, the temperature remains constant even though energy is being supplied. The added energy is stored as potential energy as the particles change arrangement, rather than as kinetic energy.

在加热曲线的平台段中,尽管持续供给能量,温度仍保持不变。增加的能量以势能形式储存起来,因为粒子的排列方式发生了变化,而不是以动能形式储存。

When ice melts, the regular solid structure breaks down and the particles become free to slide past each other. This requires energy to separate the particles slightly, so their potential energy increases. When water boils, the particles move far apart, so the potential energy increase is even greater.

冰熔化时,规则的固体结构被破坏,粒子变得可以相互滑动。这需要能量来稍微分开粒子,因此它们的势能增加。水沸腾时,粒子远离彼此,因此势能增加得更多。

This distinction between kinetic energy and potential energy is a high-level marking point. Weaker answers often say that the particles stop moving during the plateaus, which is incorrect. The particles continue to move, but their average kinetic energy stays the same.

区分动能和势能是一个高阶评分点。较弱的答案常说平台段粒子停止运动,这是错误的。粒子继续运动,但它们的平均动能保持不变。

8. Key Mark Scheme Terms | 评分标准关键术语

CIE mark schemes frequently award marks for using the following terms accurately. You should learn their exact meanings and be able to use them in sentences about the heating curve.

CIE 评分标准经常对准确使用以下术语给予分数。你应当学习这些术语的确切含义,并能在关于加热曲线的句子中使用它们。

Term Meaning 中文
Melting point The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid 固体变为液体的温度
Boiling point The temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas 液体变为气体的温度
State change A change from one state of matter to another 物质从一种状态到另一种状态的变化
Kinetic energy Energy of moving particles 运动粒子的能量
Potential energy Energy stored in the arrangement of particles 储存在粒子排列中的能量
Constant temperature Temperature does not change during a state change 物态变化期间温度不变

Use these terms instead of vague language. For example, write: During melting, the temperature remains constant because energy is used to overcome forces between particles. Do not write: The heat disappears.

使用这些术语而不要使用模糊语言。例如写作:熔化期间,温度保持不变,因为能量用于克服粒子之间的作用力。不要写:热量消失了。

9. Comparing Melting and Boiling | 熔化与沸腾的对比

The two plateaus on the heating curve are similar because both involve a change of state at constant temperature. However, they occur at different temperatures and involve different changes in particle arrangement.

加热曲线上的两个平台段相似,因为两者都涉及在恒定温度下发生物态变化。但它们发生在不同温度下,并涉及不同的粒子排列变化。

Feature Melting Boiling
Temperature 0 °C 100 °C
State change Solid to liquid Liquid to gas
Particle change Particles leave fixed positions and can slide Particles separate completely and move freely
Energy use Energy overcomes forces in the solid lattice Energy overcomes forces holding liquid particles together

When comparing the two plateaus, a full answer might say: Both plateaus show a change of state at constant temperature, but melting occurs at 0 °C and boiling occurs at 100 °C. Melting separates particles slightly, while boiling separates them completely.

比较两个平台时,完整答案可以这样说:两个平台都显示恒定温度下的物态变化,但熔化发生在 0 °C,沸腾发生在 100 °C。熔化使粒子稍微分开,而沸腾使粒子完全分开。

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid | 常见失分点

A common mistake is to say that the temperature continues to rise slowly during melting or boiling. The mark scheme requires the idea that temperature stays exactly constant during a state change.

一个常见错误是说熔化或沸腾期间温度继续缓慢上升。评分标准要求表述为物态变化期间温度完全保持不变。

Another common mistake is to write that the particles stop moving on the flat sections. In fact, particles never stop moving. Solid particles vibrate, liquid particles slide, and gas particles move rapidly. Their kinetic energy does not increase during the plateaus, but they still have kinetic energy.

另一个常见错误是写粒子在平台段停止运动。事实上,粒子永远不会停止运动。固体粒子振动,液体粒子滑动,气体粒子快速运动。平台段粒子的动能没有增加,但它们仍然具有动能。

Students also confuse evaporation with boiling. Evaporation can happen at any temperature at the surface of a liquid, while boiling happens at a specific temperature throughout the whole liquid. Only boiling appears as the 100 °C plateau on the heating curve.

学生还会混淆蒸发和沸腾。蒸发可以在任何温度下发生在液体表面,而沸腾在特定温度下发生在整个液体内部。在加热曲线上,只有沸腾表现为 100 °C 处的平台。

Finally, some answers say that the heat energy is lost or destroyed during the flat sections. This violates the principle of energy conservation. The energy is absorbed and stored as potential energy; it is not used to raise the temperature.

最后,一些答案说平台段热量丢失或消失了。这违反了能量守恒原理。能量被吸收并储存为势能,而不是用来升高温度。

11. Exam Question Walkthrough | 考试题分步解析

Sample question: The graph shows the heating curve for ice being heated. Explain why the temperature remains at 0 °C while the ice melts. Use ideas about particles and energy in your answer. [2 marks]

示例题目:图像显示冰受热时的加热曲线。请解释为什么冰熔化时温度保持在 0 °C。用粒子和能量的观点回答。[2 分]

A two-mark answer must include two separate points. One mark is for saying that energy is still being supplied or absorbed. The second mark is for saying that this energy is used to overcome forces between particles or to change the arrangement of particles, not to increase kinetic energy.

两分的答案必须包含两个独立的要点。第一分是说明能量仍在供给或吸收。第二分是说明这些能量用于克服粒子之间的作用力或改变粒子排列,而不是增加动能。

Model answer: The heater continues to transfer energy to the ice. During melting, the energy is used to break the forces holding the water particles in fixed positions, so the particles can move past each other. Because the average kinetic energy of the particles does not increase, the temperature stays constant at 0 °C.

标准答案:加热器继续向冰传递能量。熔化过程中,能量用于破坏将水粒子固定在位置上的作用力,使粒子能够相互滑动。由于粒子的平均动能没有增加,温度保持在 0 °C。

For a boiling-point question, the same structure works. Say that energy is absorbed but used to separate the particles completely. The temperature remains at 100 °C until all the liquid has changed into gas.

对于沸点题目,结构相同。说能量被吸收但用于将粒子完全分开。温度保持在 100 °C,直到所有液体都变为气体。

12. Summary Checklist | 总结清单

Before an assessment on the heating curve of water, make sure you can complete all of the following tasks: label the melting point at 0 °C and the boiling point at 100 °C; identify the solid, liquid, and gas sections; and explain why the flat sections occur.

在水的加热曲线评估之前,确保你能完成以下所有任务:标出 0 °C 的熔点和 100 °C 的沸点;识别固态、液态和气态段;并解释为什么会出现平台段。

You should also be able to describe particle behaviour in each section. In the sloping sections, particles gain kinetic energy and move faster. In the plateaus, particles gain potential energy and change arrangement while temperature stays
