📚 A-Level CAIE Philosophy: Core Knowledge Points Revision | A-Level CAIE
This revision guide summarises the core knowledge points examined across CAIE A-Level Philosophy. It covers epistemology, metaphysics, ethics and philosophy of religion, with emphasis on the arguments, distinctions and evaluation skills you need in Paper 1 and Paper 2.
1. The Nature of Philosophy |
Philosophy is the activity of analysing concepts, constructing arguments and evaluating rival positions rather than simply collecting facts. In CAIE questions, you must show awareness of what makes a claim philosophical: it concerns fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, value and meaning, and it proceeds by reasoned argument rather than empirical measurement alone.
A basic philosophical skill is identifying premises and conclusions, and distinguishing deductive from inductive reasoning. Deductive arguments aim for certainty, while inductive arguments aim for probability. You also need to recognise validity, soundness, circularity, ambiguity and counterexamples.
2. Epistemology: Knowledge and Justification |
The traditional definition of knowledge is justified true belief (JTB). A person S knows that P if and only if P is true, S believes that P, and S has justification for believing P. This tripartite definition is often the starting point for exam questions on the nature of knowledge.
Gettier cases challenge the JTB definition by showing that a person can have a justified true belief that is only accidentally true. For example, Smith may have strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford, and from this infer the true disjunction ‘Jones owns a Ford or Brown is in Barcelona’ even though the first part is false but the second is true by luck. Evaluation questions ask whether the JTB definition can be repaired by adding a ‘no false lemmas’ condition or a causal condition.
Other relevant distinctions include knowledge by acquaintance vs knowledge by description, and a priori vs a posteriori knowledge. A priori knowledge is known independently of experience, such as ‘all bachelors are unmarried’, while a posteriori knowledge depends on experience, such as ‘water
