📚 Common Misconceptions in A-Level CAIE Accounting and How to Correct Them | A-Level CAIE
In A-Level CAIE Accounting, examiners repeatedly see the same mistakes: wrong double entries, incorrect adjustment directions and confusion between capital and revenue items. This article identifies common misconceptions and shows how to correct them with clear rules that match the CAIE syllabus.
1. Confusing Capital and Revenue Expenditure |
A common exam mistake is to treat a repair as a non-current asset when it only restores existing capacity. Capital expenditure brings long-term benefits or improves an asset; revenue expenditure is a day-to-day running cost.
For example, the purchase price, delivery, installation and testing costs of a new machine are capitalised. Annual insurance, fuel and routine repairs are revenue expenses.
If a revenue expense is wrongly capitalised, profit and non-current assets are overstated. If a capital expense is expensed, profit is understated.
2. Depreciation Methods and Partial-Year Charges |
Students often calculate straight-line depreciation on the original cost instead of the depreciable amount. Straight-line depreciation is based on cost minus residual value over useful life.
Annual depreciation = (Cost − Residual value) ÷ Useful life
When an asset is held for part of a year, depreciation must be prorated by months, unless the accounting policy states a full year charge in the year of purchase and none in the year of disposal.
For the reducing balance method, depreciation = Net book value × fixed percentage. After a revaluation, depreciation is based on the revalued amount and remaining useful life.
3. Bad Debts vs Provision for Doubtful Debts |
A bad debt is a specific receivable that is now uncollectible. It is written off by debiting Bad Debts Expense and crediting Trade Receivables.
A provision for doubtful debts is an estimate based on the receivables balance. Students often record the full provision amount again instead of recording only the adjustment for the period.
If the provision increases, debit the Income Statement and credit Provision for Doubtful Debts. If it decreases, debit Provision and credit the Income Statement.
4. Inventory Valuation: Lower of Cost and NRV |
Inventory must be valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value. NRV is the estimated selling price minus costs to complete and minus selling costs.
NRV = Estimated selling price − Costs to complete − Selling costs
A frequent error is to use the normal selling price as NRV without deducting selling expenses. Another error is comparing at total inventory level, while CAIE expects item-by-item comparison.
Understating closing inventory reduces gross profit and current assets; overstating closing inventory increases them.
5. Double-Entry Rules for Expenses and Liabilities |
Many errors come from reversing the double-entry rules. Expenses and assets increase with debits; liabilities, capital and income increase with credits.
For example, paying electricity by cheque requires Dr Electricity Expense and Cr Bank. Purchasing goods on credit requires Dr Purchases and Cr Trade Payables.
Remember DEAD CLIC: Debit increases Expenses, Assets and Drawings; Credit increases Liabilities, Income and Capital.
6. Bank Reconciliation: Which Side to Adjust? |
Students often add unpresented cheques to the cash book balance or deduct bank charges from the bank statement balance. The starting point determines the direction of adjustment.
To reconcile the bank statement balance to the corrected balance, add lodgements not yet credited and deduct unpresented cheques.
