IGCSE CAIE Drama: Case Study Practical Drill | IGCSE CAIE

📚 IGCSE CAIE Drama: Case Study Practical Drill | IGCSE CAIE

In IGCSE CAIE Drama, the written case study question asks you to move beyond plot summary and think as an actor, director and designer. This practical drill will build your ability to shape a scene using voice, body, space and technical elements, so you can produce precise, high-band responses under timed conditions.

1. Understand the CAIE Case Study Question | 理解 CAIE 案例分析题型

CAIE case study questions typically provide a short extract or a set of given circumstances and ask how you would perform, direct or design a selected moment. The examiner wants specific theatre choices, not general comments.

For example, a question may say: “You are playing Alex in the extract. Explain how you would use your voice and movement to show Alex’s change from fear to anger.” Your answer should name vocal tone, pitch, pace, pause, gesture, posture, eye contact, proxemics and blocking.

Typical command words include perform, direct, design, create tension, show relationships and communicate meaning to the audience. Every point must link to the selected extract, not to the whole play.

2. Choose and Unpack an Extract |

Choose a short 60-90 second moment from a set text or use the unseen extract. Read it at least three times: first for story, second for character objectives, third for staging opportunities.

Mark the given circumstances: who, where, when, what has just happened, and what each character wants. Write a single objective for each character beginning with “I want to…” This gives every later acting or design choice a purpose.

Also note the scene’s turning point. The turning point is the moment when power, emotion or information shifts. High-band answers focus on the turning point rather than describing the whole extract evenly.

3. Actor’s Toolkit: Voice, Body and Space |

For voice, always link technique to effect: “I would drop my volume to a tense whisper on ‘don’t move’ to force Alex to lean in and increase the threat.” Avoid listing techniques without purpose.

For voice, useful terms include pitch, pace, pause, tone, volume, emphasis, intonation, articulation and breath. For example, a rising intonation on a statement can suggest uncertainty, while a deliberate pause before a name can signal power.

For body, use posture, tension, gesture and facial expression. For space, discuss proxemics, levels, physical contact and the use of stage areas such as downstage centre or upstage left.

A high-band answer often covers two or three actor tools together and connects them to audience response. For instance, a clenched fist plus a whispered line plus a step forward creates a stronger threat than any one choice alone.

4. Directing the Scene: Blocking and Stage Picture |

As a director, think about where actors enter, exit, stand, sit and move. Name stage directions such as downstage centre, upstage left, cross, counter-cross and freeze.

Explain the stage picture: “I would place Alex downstage left facing the audience while Maya remains upstage right in shadow, creating a diagonal line of tension and making the audience watch Alex’s reaction.”

Every blocking decision should serve the scene’s mood, relationship or turning point. For example, turning away from the audience can hide emotion, while a sudden cross to centre stage can show a character seizing control.

Use blocking to show status shifts. A character who begins seated and then stands slowly while the other steps back has visibly gained power without saying a word.

5. Building Character Relationships |

Case studies often ask how you would show a shift in status or intimacy. Use status indicators: eye contact, physical height, interruptions, pauses before obeying, touching or avoiding touch.

For example: “At first I would avoid Jamie’s eyes and keep my arms folded to show low status; after the secret is revealed, I would stand taller, step into his space and hold his gaze on ‘mine’.”

This turns a character relationship into a playable action. Instead of saying “Rachel is afraid of Daniel”, write “Rachel keeps the bench between them and answers in a clipped whisper”.

Remember that relationships are dynamic. A good answer shows the moment when the relationship changes, using a beat of stillness or a sudden gesture.

6. Creating Tension and Rhythm |

Tension is built through contrast: fast/slow, loud/quiet, movement/stillness, light/dark. Identify the scene’s rhythm and mark beats where the energy shifts.

You might write: “I would hold a three-second silence before the final line, freezing mid-gesture, to make the audience anticipate the revelation.”

Mention specific pauses, punctuation and overlapping dialogue as directorial tools. For example, overlapping lines can raise pace and panic, while a long pause after a question can create dread.

Rhythm is not just speed. A scene may move slowly but feel tense if the pauses are loaded and eye contact is unbroken. Describe the quality of the movement, not only its speed.

7. Design Elements: Lighting, Sound and Costume |

If the question asks about design, always link the element to meaning. For lighting, name colour, intensity, angle, focus and fade. For sound, name volume, pitch, rhythm, texture and diegetic/non-diegetic source.

Example: “A low blue wash from upstage with a single amber side light on the letter would create a cold public space while isolating the private truth.”

Costume, props and set should support period, status, character journey and practical movement. A stiff collar can restrict movement and suggest social constraint; a loose coat can allow sudden, violent gestures.

For sound, state whether the sound is inside or outside the scene. A distant train whistle can remind the audience of escape, while a heartbeat underscore can externalise a character’s fear.

8. Sample Case Study Drill: ‘The Last Platform’ |

Here is a short original extract:

RACHEL: You came back. (She stays near the bench, arms stiff.)
DANIEL: Don’t start. The train’s in ten minutes.
RACHEL: You said you would not be here.
DANIEL: I changed my mind. Sit down.
RACHEL: No.
DANIEL: (quietly) I am not asking.

Let us answer a typical prompt: “You are playing Rachel. Explain how you would use your voice and movement to show her fear and resistance.”

I would begin with my arms folded tightly and weight shifted onto my back foot, making Rachel small and ready to retreat. On ‘You came back’, I would use a low, unsteady tone with a slight tremor on ‘came’ to suggest she is controlling fear. I would avoid Daniel’s eyes and fix my gaze on the bench.

When Daniel says ‘Sit down’, I would step back into upstage left and shake my head sharply on ‘No’, raising my chin to show a burst of defiance. Then, as he says ‘I am not asking’, I would freeze, breathe audibly, and lower my eyes before slowly sitting, showing resistance collapsing into compliance.

This answer names movement, voice, space and beats, and links them to character change. It also uses stage directions and a clear turning point.
