📚 IGCSE CAIE Drama: Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | IGCSE CAIE

Success in IGCSE CAIE Drama is not just about loving the stage; it is about showing examiners that you can make precise, well-supported choices and reflect on their effect. This guide breaks down the written paper techniques and marking criteria you need to move from general description to high-band analysis.

1. Understanding the Paper and the Assessment Objectives |

Before you write anything, check the front of the paper and underline the command words. CAIE Drama papers reward candidates who answer the question set, not those who simply write everything they know about a play.

For the written paper, you may be asked to respond to a set text extract, a devised piece, or a directorial concept for an unseen scene. All questions expect you to adopt a clear role and make choices that create meaning for an audience.

Past papers show that marks are usually split across knowledge, analysis and evaluation. Examiners look for accurate subject terminology, awareness of audience impact, and a clear justification for every staging, acting or design decision.

Command word What it asks
Describe Give accurate features without judgement
Explain Give reasons and links to effect
Analyse Break down how meaning is made 分析 拆解意义如何产生
Evaluate Make a supported judgement on effectiveness

Keep these command words visible while you practise. A one-word change from ‘describe’ to ‘evaluate’ should completely change the depth of your answer.

2. Using Precise Drama Terminology |

Terms like proxemics, blocking, end-on, thrust, sightlines, semiotics, subtext and unit of action are not decorative; they show you can name the craft. But never use a term without explaining its effect.

像 proxemics(空间关系)、blocking(舞台调度)、end-on(镜框式舞台)、thrust(伸出式舞台)、sightlines(视线)、semiotics(符号学)、subtext(潜台词)和 unit of action(行动单位)等术语不是装饰,它们说明你能说出专业技能。

For example, writing ‘the actor should stand close to the other performer’ is weak, whereas ‘the actor should close proxemics to invading distance, creating tension because the audience recognises that personal space has been violated’ is much stronger.
