1. Understanding the Written Paper and Command Words | 了解试卷与指令词
In CAIE IGCSE Engineering, extended writing items usually appear in the written paper and are often worth 6 to 10 marks. They require more than recall: you must apply engineering principles to a material, component, manufacturing process or system.

The first step is to circle the command word. Common command words include describe, explain, compare, evaluate and justify. The command word determines the type of response you should write.

Mark schemes in CAIE IGCSE Engineering reward valid engineering points that go beyond everyday statements. For example, saying “aluminium is light” is weaker than saying “aluminium has a density of about 2700 kg/m³, which reduces chassis mass and increases vehicle range.”

4. Introduction Structure | 引言结构
An effective introduction has two or three sentences. Sentence one sets the context: what the component or system must achieve. Sentence two states your main argument or decision. This gives the examiner a clear direction from the start.

For example: “A chassis must provide rigidity, crash protection and mounting points while keeping mass low. Aluminium alloys offer a better strength-to-weight balance for an electric car than mild steel, although manufacturing cost is higher.”

Each main paragraph should follow PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link. Start with a technical point, support it with data or a named process, explain how it works, then link back to the question.

6. Using Technical Language and Data | 使用技术语言与数据
Use accurate technical vocabulary. For materials, include terms such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, ductility, hardness, toughness, fatigue, creep and thermal expansion. For manufacturing, refer to forming, casting, machining, welding, brazing and joining.
