📚 IGCSE CAIE History: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference | IGCSE CAIE

This is not a mathematics cheat sheet. In IGCSE CAIE History, ‘formulas’ mean repeatable reasoning patterns for causation, source evaluation and essay structure. They help you turn scattered factual knowledge into exam-ready analytical arguments.

1. The Causation Theorem |

For most ‘why’ or ‘explain’ questions, use the three-layer cause formula: Long-term causes set the background, medium-term causes create the fault line, and a short-term trigger starts the event.

Example formula: Cause = Background (long-term) + Fault line (medium-term) + Spark (short-term). For the First World War: nationalism and imperialism (long-term) + alliance system and war plans (medium-term) + the assassination at Sarajevo (short-term).
