📚 IGCSE CAIE Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answer | IGCSE CAIE
In IGCSE CAIE Philosophy, a well-structured essay is often the difference between a middle-band answer and a top-band answer. Examiners look for clear definitions, logically ordered arguments, relevant examples, and a justified conclusion, not just a list of facts.
1. Understanding the Command Words |
Before writing anything, identify what the question is asking. Common CAIE command words include ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’, ‘discuss’, ‘to what extent’, and ‘do you agree’. Each requires a different balance of description, analysis, and judgement.
CAIE 常见的指令词包括 ‘explain’(解释)、’evaluate’(评估)、’discuss’(讨论)、’to what extent’(在多大程度上)和 ‘do you agree’(你是否同意)。
For example, ‘Explain the divine command theory’ mainly asks for accurate exposition, whereas ‘Evaluate the divine command theory’ requires you to weigh strengths and weaknesses before reaching a conclusion.
Underline the command word and any key terms in the question. This small step prevents you from writing a purely descriptive essay when the examiner expects evaluation.
2. Building a Clear Introduction |
A strong introduction should do three things: define any key terms, show how you interpret the question, and signpost your main line of argument. It should be concise, usually three to five sentences in an exam essay.
Do not start with a vague generalisation such as ‘Since the beginning of time, humans have asked questions.’ Instead, begin directly with the philosophical issue in the question.
For a question like ‘Should we always obey the law?’, an effective introduction might define ‘law’ and state that although law normally creates stability, there can be moral exceptions such as unjust laws or emergencies.
3. Presenting Arguments: PEEL and PEE | 呈现论点:PEEL 与 PEE
Use a paragraph structure such as PEEL: Point, Evidence/Example, Explanation, Link back to the question. This keeps each paragraph focused and prevents rambling.
An alternative is PEE: Point, Evidence, Explanation. In philosophy, the ‘evidence’ is often a reason, a principle, or a thought experiment rather than empirical data.
Example PEEL paragraph: Point – obeying the law protects social order. Evidence – Hobbes argues that without law life would be ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short’. Explanation – laws coordinate behaviour and prevent harm, so a general duty to obey is justified. Link – therefore, in most ordinary cases, obedience is morally required.
4. Using Examples and Thought Experiments |
Philosophy essays improve greatly when abstract arguments are illustrated with sharp, relevant examples. Use examples from ethics, epistemology, religion, or politics depending on the syllabus topic.
Thought experiments such as Plato’s Ring of Gyges, the Trolley Problem, or Descartes’ Evil Demon can show the examiner that you can apply ideas, not just repeat them.
When you include an example, always explain why it matters. A weak answer might say ‘Plato uses the Ring of Gyges’; a strong answer says ‘The Ring of Gyges tests whether people obey morality only because they fear punishment, which challenges the idea that we are truly just for its own sake.’
5. Counterarguments and Rebuttals |
Top-band philosophy answers do not ignore opposing views. You should include at least one counterargument and then respond to it, showing why your position still stands or where its limits lie.
A useful pattern is: ‘One objection to this view is… However, this objection is not decisive because…’ This demonstrates critical thinking rather than one-sided assertion.
For example, someone might argue that civil disobedience undermines respect for law. You could reply that a stable legal system can tolerate limited, non-violent protest precisely because it preserves the deeper principle of justice.
6. Evaluation and Judgement |
Evaluation means weighing competing arguments rather than just describing them. You might consider strength, weakness, scope, consistency, and practical implications of a theory or claim.
Phrases like ‘this is a strong argument because…’, ‘a significant weakness is…’, and ‘this is more persuasive in cases where…’ signal evaluative thinking to the examiner.
A judgement should be clear but not dogmatic. You might conclude that a view is mostly convincing, convincing only under certain conditions, or unable to solve a central problem.
7. Structuring the Conclusion |
The conclusion should directly answer the question, summarise the strongest reasons on both sides, and state your final judgement with a brief justification. Avoid introducing new arguments at this stage.
A formula for the conclusion is: ‘In conclusion, although X has some force, the stronger position is Y because…’ This shows balance and clarity.
Never end with a simple ‘I have discussed both sides’ without a judgement. CAIE examiners reward a reasoned verdict, not neutrality for its own sake.
8. Model Answer: ‘Should We Always Obey the Law?’ |
Below is a model answer demonstrating the framework. It is not the only possible answer, but it shows how introduction, argument, counterargument, evaluation, and conclusion fit together.
Introduction: We normally have a moral duty to obey the law because law protects order, security, and rights. However, this duty is not absolute: when laws are deeply unjust or when a higher moral principle is at stake, civil disobedience may be justified.
Point 1: The strongest reason for obeying the law is social stability. Thomas Hobbes argues that without a sovereign power to enforce rules, life would descend into a ‘war of all against all’. Even if a particular law is inconvenient, obeying it maintains the general system that protects everyone.
Point 2: In a democracy, law also carries democratic legitimacy. When citizens participate in making laws, there is a stronger obligation to obey them. Socrates in the Crito suggests that by choosing to live in Athens, he has implicitly agreed to accept its laws, even when they harm him personally.
Counterargument: However, an absolute duty to obey law is morally dangerous. Nazi Germany and apartheid South Africa used legal systems to enforce injustice. If law alone determined right and wrong, we could never criticise evil laws. Martin Luther King Jr argued that ‘an unjust law is no law at all’
