📚 IGCSE CAIE Philosophy: Unit Test Mock Paper Explained | IGCSE CAIE
This mock paper walkthrough covers the most common CAIE IGCSE Philosophy question types, including knowledge, reality, religion, ethics, free will and personal identity. For each question, the commentary explains what examiners expect and how to turn a basic answer into a high-mark evaluation.
1. Exam Structure and Command Words |
CAIE IGCSE Philosophy papers usually contain short-answer questions that test precise knowledge and longer questions that require evaluation of philosophical claims.
CAIE IGCSE
Command words are the best guide to depth. Words such as ‘state’ and ‘define’ need only a concise answer, while ‘explain’, ‘compare’ and ‘evaluate’ require developed reasoning and examples.
| Command Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| State | Identify briefly /
| Define | Give a precise meaning /
| Explain | Show how or why /
| Compare | Show similarities and differences /
| Evaluate | Judge strengths and weaknesses /
2. Question 1: Defining Knowledge |
A typical 3-mark question reads: “Define knowledge as justified true belief and give one example.”
The standard answer states that knowledge has three conditions: belief, truth and justification. You know that p only if you believe p, p is true, and you have good reasons or evidence for p.
Many candidates forget that truth is objective: if a belief is false, it cannot count as knowledge even if the person feels certain.
Use a concrete case, such as a stopped clock showing the correct time by luck, to explain why justification matters.
3. Question 2: Plato’s Cave and Reality |
A possible question is: “Explain how Plato’s allegory of the cave supports the distinction between appearance and reality.”
The allegory describes prisoners chained in a cave who see only shadows on a wall and mistake those shadows for reality.
When a prisoner escapes, he first suffers from the light, but gradually he sees the sun and understands that the previous world was mere appearance.
In an IGCSE answer, link the sun to the Form of the Good and the shadows to sensory illusion, showing why Plato thinks true knowledge requires reason rather than the senses.
4. Question 3: Cosmological Argument |
A typical question asks: “Explain two strengths of the cosmological argument for the existence of God.”
The argument says that every event has a cause, so the universe must have a first cause, which believers identify as God.
One strength is that it appeals to our everyday experience of cause and effect, making it intuitive and easy to grasp.
Another strength is that it offers a rational explanation for why there is something rather than nothing, instead of merely asserting religious faith.
For balance, also mention the weakness that the argument assumes every event needs a cause, but quantum physics may show uncaused events.
5. Question 4: Utilitarianism in Ethics |
A scenario question asks: “Should a doctor lie to a patient to reduce distress? Evaluate this using act utilitarianism.”
Act utilitarianism says an action is right if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number.
In the doctor case, lying may reduce the patient’s immediate anxiety, but it can damage trust and lead to worse long-term consequences.
A strong answer calculates the likely consequences for all affected people, such as the patient, family and medical staff, rather than judging only the doctor’s intention.
Use hedonic units or at least speak of pleasure and pain, happiness and suffering, to show command of utilitarian language.
6. Question 5: Kantian Duty Ethics |
A parallel question says: “Explain how Kant’s categorical imperative would assess the same doctor’s lie.”
Kant argues that moral actions must be universalisable and must treat persons as ends, never merely as means.
If everyone lied whenever it was convenient, the practice of promising and trusting speech would collapse, so lying fails the universal law test.
