📚 IGCSE CAIE Philosophy: Teaching Strategies and Lesson Plan Examples | IGCSE CAIE

This article offers practical teaching guidance for Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy. It focuses on concept-building, argument analysis, classroom dialogue and exam preparation, and it includes two ready-to-use lesson plans.

1. Understanding the Syllabus and Assessment Objectives |

Start by reading the syllabus as a teaching contract. Identify the core themes, such as epistemology, ethics, metaphysics and logic, and map them against the assessment objectives of knowledge, reasoning and evaluation.

A useful course map divides the course into three skill strands: accurate knowledge of key concepts, analysis of arguments, and evaluative writing. Each unit should combine at least two strands so that students do not learn content in isolation from skills.

Do not teach philosophy as a collection of famous names. Instead, treat each theme as a question that students must learn to answer, support and criticise.

Typical assessment focus What teachers should train
Accurate use of philosophical terms and positions | 准确使用哲学术语与立场
Weighing strengths and limitations to reach a judgement | 权衡优点与局限以形成判断

2. Clarifying Key Concepts before Arguments |

IGCSE candidates often lose marks because they confuse terms such as ‘valid’, ‘sound’, ‘a priori’, ’empirical’, ‘absolute’ and ‘relative’. Begin each new topic by defining key terms explicitly and testing them with quick examples.

Use concept cards or Frayer models to help students distinguish meaning, example, non-example and exam sentence for each term.

A term is not learned when students can repeat a definition; it is learned when they can identify a misuse in someone else’s argument.

Give quick diagnostic tasks: ‘Which of the following sentences uses “sound” correctly?’ This exposes confusion before it reaches the final examination.

3. Teaching Argument Analysis with Everyday Examples |

Philosophy papers reward precise reference to premises and conclusions. Before using classical texts, practise with simple arguments from school rules, adverts or social media posts.

Show students how to underline conclusion indicators such as ‘therefore’, ‘so’, ‘thus’ and premise indicators such as ‘because’, ‘since’, ‘given that’.

教学生如何划出 ‘therefore’、’so’、’thus’ 等结论指示词,以及 ‘because’、’since’、’given that’ 等前提指示词。

Then ask them to reconstruct the argument in standard form: premise 1, premise 2, therefore conclusion.

Only when students can do this reliably should they move to evaluating whether the premises are acceptable and whether the conclusion follows.

  • Premise 1: If a school rule is unfair, students should question it.
  • Premise 2: This rule is unfair.
  • Conclusion: Therefore, students should question it.

4. Socratic Seminars and Classroom Dialogue |

Philosophy cannot be taught only through teacher explanation. Structured dialogue trains students to listen, question and refine their views, which improves both reasoning and written evaluation.

Use a fishbowl format: an inner circle discusses a question while an outer circle records evidence of good reasoning, counter-examples and changes of mind.

Set clear sentence stems, such as ‘I agree because…’, ‘That view assumes…’, ‘Can you give an example?’, to keep dialogue academic rather than personal.

设定明确的句型,如 ‘I agree because…’、’That view assumes…’、’Can you give an example?’,使对话保持学术性,而不是人身攻击。

The teacher should act as a facilitator who asks probing questions, not as the source of all answers. Resist the temptation to correct every error immediately.

5. Structuring Written Responses with PEEL | 用 PEEL 框架训练答题结构

Many IGCSE Philosophy questions require sustained evaluative writing. The PEEL structure, Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link, gives weaker writers a reliable scaffold.

For evaluation questions, teachers should extend PEEL by adding a counter-argument and a response: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Counter, Reply, Link.

Show students model paragraphs that begin with a clear judgement, not with ‘Some people think…’ or ‘In this essay I will…’.

或 ‘In this essay I will…’ 开头。

Use colour-coding to highlight where a paragraph states a view, supports it, considers an objection and returns to the question.
