The Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English qualification (syllabus 0475) is built around two externally examined papers. Paper 1 covers Poetry and Prose, while Paper 2 covers Drama. Each paper lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and carries 50 marks. You answer two questions on each paper, and every essay is marked out of 25. The total of 100 marks is split equally between the two papers.

There are two common question styles. Passage-based questions give you a printed extract and ask you to analyse how the writer creates effects in that moment. General essay questions ask you to explore a character, theme, relationship or setting across the whole text, using your own selected evidence.

In practice, high marks depend on balancing all four objectives. A candidate who knows the story perfectly but cannot analyse language will remain limited. Cambridge marking uses hierarchical levels. A top-band essay is not just accurate; it is exploratory, well argued and tightly focused on the question. Lower-band answers often reconstruct the plot or list techniques without explaining their effect.

In a high-level response, quotations are brief, purposeful and embedded. The candidate moves between precise detail and the wider meaning of the text. The personal response is evaluative, for example judging whether a character change is convincing or whether an ending is satisfying.
