📚 IGCSE Cambridge Music: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answer | IGCSE 剑桥音乐:论文写作框架与范文
In the Cambridge IGCSE Music written paper, high-scoring answers do not simply list musical facts: they show a clear essay structure, use accurate musical vocabulary, and support every point with reference to what is heard or seen in the score.
在剑桥 IGCSE 音乐笔试中,高分答案不只是罗列音乐事实:它们展现出清晰的论文结构、使用准确的音乐术语,并引用所听到的内容或乐谱中的证据来支持每一个观点。
1. What the Cambridge IGCSE Music Essay Question Asks | 剑桥 IGCSE 音乐论文题考查什么
The Cambridge IGCSE Music written paper (for syllabus 0410) includes listening questions and extended written answers. Extended questions often carry between 6 and 12 marks and ask you to describe how a composer uses musical elements, compare two excerpts, or explain the effect of a section. The examiner expects a developed piece of writing, not one-word or single-sentence answers.
剑桥 IGCSE 音乐笔试(教学大纲 0410)包括听力题和扩展书面回答。扩展题通常占 6 到 12 分,要求你描述作曲家如何运用音乐元素、比较两个选段,或解释某一段落的音乐效果。考官期待的是有充分展开的写作,而不是一个词或单句答案。
A strong essay answer is built around musical evidence. You should name specific instruments, techniques, bar numbers or timings, and explain the effect of those features. The question usually focuses on the music itself, not on the composer’s biography or personal feelings.
一篇优秀的论文式回答要建立在音乐证据之上。你应当写出具体的乐器、技法、小节号或时间,并解释这些特征的效果。题目通常关注音乐本身,而不是作曲家的生平或个人感受。
2. Reading the Question: Command Words and Focus | 审题:指令词与答题重点
Command words tell you what kind of thinking the examiner wants. Words such as “describe”, “explain”, “compare” and “evaluate” have different demands. Misreading the command word is one of the most common reasons for losing marks.
指令词告诉你考官要求的是哪一种思考方式。“描述”、“解释”、“比较”和“评价”等词有不同的答题要求。误解指令词是最常见的失分原因之一。
| Command word | What it asks you to do | Example focus |
|---|---|---|
| Describe | Give musical features using appropriate vocabulary | “The melody moves by step and rises in sequence.” |
| Explain | Give reasons or effects for a musical feature | “The rising sequence builds tension because each repetition starts higher.” |
| Compare | Identify similarities and differences | “Both excerpts use ostinato, but Extract A uses a rhythmic ostinato while Extract B uses a harmonic ostinato.” |
| Evaluate | Make a judgement supported by evidence | “The most important feature is the use of syncopation because it drives the rhythm forward.” |
Before you start writing, underline the command word and the musical element the question names, such as melody, rhythm, texture, harmony or instruments. This keeps your answer focused.
动笔前,先划出指令词和题目提到的音乐要素,例如旋律、节奏、织体、和声或乐器。这样能使你的回答保持聚焦。
3. The PEEL Paragraph Model for Music Essays | 音乐论文的 PEEL 段落模型
Music essays work well with the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. This model helps you write analytically rather than descriptively or narratively.
音乐论文非常适合使用 PEEL 结构:观点、证据、解释、联系。这个模型帮助你进行分析性写作,而不是描述性或叙述性写作。
Point states a musical observation. Evidence gives a specific moment, bar number, instrument or technique. Explanation says how that technique creates the effect or mood. Link connects the point back to the question or forward to the next idea.
观点陈述一个音乐观察。证据给出具体的时刻、小节号、乐器或技法。解释说明该技法如何产生音乐效果或情绪。联系把观点回扣到题目,或引出下一个想法。
Example sentence: “The composer creates tension through a rising sequence (Point). In bars 12 to 16 the violin line ascends by step (Evidence), which increases expectation because each repetition starts higher (Explanation), directly answering the question about building excitement (Link).”
例句:“作曲家通过上行模进制造紧张感(观点)。在第 12 到 16 小节,小提琴旋律逐级上行(证据),由于每一次重复都从更高的音开始,使期待感不断增强(解释),这直接回答了关于积蓄兴奋感的问题(联系)。”
4. Building a Music Vocabulary Bank | 建立音乐术语库
Examiners reward precise musical language. Instead of writing “the music gets louder”, write “there is a gradual crescendo from piano to forte”. Instead of “the tune goes up”, write “the melody rises by step and then leaps a perfect fourth”.
考官会奖励准确的音乐语言。不要写“音乐变响了”,而要写“音乐从弱到强出现了渐强”。不要写“曲调向上”,而要写“旋律逐级上行,然后跳跃一个纯四度”。
Use the categories below to expand your vocabulary. Keep a glossary or flashcard set as part of your revision.
使用下面这些类别来扩充你的术语库。复习时准备一份术语表或闪卡。
| Element | Useful terms |
|---|---|
| Melody | step, leap, sequence, motif, phrase, range, contour, ornamentation |
| Rhythm | syncopation, dotted rhythm, ostinato, metre, tempo, rubato, cross-rhythm |
| Texture | monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, melody and accompaniment, unison, octaves |
| Harmony and tonality | major, minor, modal, consonant, dissonant, cadence, pedal, key change |
| Instruments and timbre | pizzicato, legato, mute, double stopping, woodwind, brass, percussion, bright, mellow |
5. Writing a Focused Introduction | 写出聚焦的引言
A strong introduction defines the piece, genre, period and the question focus. It should not repeat the question word for word or give vague background such as “This is a very nice piece.”
一个有力的引言要明确乐曲、体裁、时期和答题重点。不要逐字重复题目,也不要写“这是一首很好听的曲子”之类的模糊背景。
Example: “This excerpt from Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor uses a small orchestral texture, a repeated two-note motif and a restless harmonic rhythm to create a tense, dramatic mood.”
示例:“这段选自莫扎特《G 小调第四十交响曲》,运用了小编制管弦乐织体、重复的双音动机和不安的和声节奏,营造出紧张而戏剧性的情绪。”
Your introduction should be two or three sentences. It gives the examiner a clear sense of direction and shows that you know the music and the question.
引言应有两到三句话。它让考官清楚地看到你的答题方向,并表明你熟悉音乐和题目。
6. Analysing Melody and Rhythm | 分析旋律与节奏
When writing about melody, comment on contour, range, intervals, phrasing, motifs, repetition, sequence and ornamentation. When writing about rhythm, mention metre, tempo, syncopation, dotted rhythms, ostinato, note values and rests.
分析旋律时,要评论轮廓、音域、音程、乐句、动机、重复、模进和装饰音。分析节奏时,要提到拍号、速度、切分音、附点节奏、固定音型、时值和休止符。
Use bar numbers or timings to anchor your observations. Example: “The main motif is a descending semitone pair in bar 1, repeated in sequence at bar 5 and inverted at bar 9.”
用小节号或时间点为你的观察提供依据。例如:“主要动机是第 1 小节的一对下行半音,在第 5 小节以模进重复,并在第 9 小节转位。”
Do not simply list features. Explain the effect: “The dotted rhythm in the brass fanfare gives the opening a march-like, ceremonial character.”
不要只罗列特征。要解释效果:“铜管号角曲中的附点节奏赋予开头进行曲般、仪式性的特征。”
7. Analysing Harmony and Tonality | 分析和声与调性
Harmony refers to the vertical combination of notes and chord progressions. Tonality refers to the key system: major, minor, modal, atonal, and any key changes or modulations.
和声指音符的纵向组合与和弦进行。调性指调式系统:大调、小调、调式、无调性,以及任何转调或调性变化。
Useful harmonic terms include consonant, dissonant, diatonic, chromatic, cadence, pedal, drone and harmonic rhythm. Common cadences are perfect, imperfect, plagal and interrupted.
有用的和声术语包括协和、不协和、自然音、半音、终止式、持续音、持续低音和和声节奏。常见的终止式有正格终止、不完全终止、变格终止和阻碍终止。
Example: “The piece moves from G minor to B flat major at bar 20, creating a brighter contrast. The repeated dominant pedal in bars 28 to 32 increases tension before the final perfect cadence.”
示例:“乐曲在第 20 小节从 G 小调转到降 B 大调,形成更明亮的对比。第 28 至 32 小节反复出现的属持续音增加了紧张感,随后进入最后的正格终止。”
8. Analysing Texture, Instruments and Timbre | 分析织体、乐器与音色
Texture describes how musical lines relate to one another. Common textures include monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, melody and accompaniment, unison and octaves. A change in texture is often a structural marker, so mention it when it occurs.
织体描述各个音乐线条之间的关系。常见的织体包括单声部、主调织体、复调织体、旋律加伴奏、齐奏和八度重复。织体的变化往往是结构标志,因此出现变化时要提到。
Instrumentation and timbre are also powerful evidence. Name the instrument family and any playing technique, such as pizzicato, legato, mute, double stopping, tremolo or arco. Describe the resulting timbre with words like bright, dark, bright, harsh, mellow or reedy.
乐器和音色也是有力的证据。要写出乐器家族和演奏技法,例如拨弦、连弓、弱音器、双音、颤弓或用弓拉奏。用明亮、黯淡、尖锐、柔和或带簧片感等词语描述音色。
Example: “The texture changes from homophonic in bars 1 to 8 to polyphonic at bar 9, when the cellos introduce a contrasting countermelody. The violins play pizzicato, giving a light, percussive timbre.”
示例:“织体在第 1 至 8 小节为主调织体,到第 9 小节变为复调织体,此时大提琴引入对比性对位旋律。小提琴用拨弦演奏,产生轻盈、打击乐般的音色。”
9. Comparison and Set-Work Essays | 比较题与指定作品论文
For comparison questions, structure your answer by musical element rather than writing first about Extract A and then about Extract B. This makes the similarities and differences clearer and helps you avoid repeating yourself.
回答比较题时,要按音乐要素组织答案,而不是先写选段 A,再写选段 B。这样能更清晰地呈现异同,避免重复。
Use linking words and phrases: “similarly”, “in contrast”, “whereas”, “both”, “unlike”, “however”. Example: “Both extracts use an ostinato, but Extract A uses a rhythmic ostinato in the percussion while Extract B uses a harmonic ostinato in the strings.”
使用连接词和短语:“相似地”、“相反”、“而”、“两者都”、“不同于”、“然而”。示例:“两个选段都使用了固定音型,但选段 A 是在打击乐声部使用节奏固定音型,而选段 B 是在弦乐声部使用和声固定音型。”
For set-work essays, show contextual knowledge only when it supports musical analysis. Mention the composer, period, genre, form and any characteristic features of the style. Do not turn the answer into a biography.
写指定作品论文时,只有在有助于音乐分析时才展示背景知识。可以提到作曲家、时期、体裁、曲式和该风格的典型特征。不要把答案写成传记。
10. Model Answer with Annotations | 范文与注释
The following model answer responds to a typical question: “Using musical terms, describe how the composer creates a sense of excitement in this excerpt.”
以下范文回答一道典型题目:“使用音乐术语,描述作曲家如何在这段音乐中制造兴奋感。”
The composer builds excitement through rhythm, dynamics and texture. The opening rhythmic motif uses repeated quavers and syncopation, which immediately create forward drive. At bar 9 the tempo feels faster because the note values shorten to semiquavers. The dynamic plan is a long crescendo from piano to fortissimo, reinforced by a thickening texture: woodwind and brass enter in bar 17 and double the string parts. The harmony also becomes more urgent because the bass moves by rising semitone steps from bar 21, increasing tension. Finally, the cymbal crash at bar 28 marks the climax. All these features combine to produce a powerful sense of excitement.
Annotation: notice that every sentence names a musical element and gives a specific location or feature. The answer does not tell a story about the music; it analyses how the music is put together.
注释:注意每句话都点出一个音乐要素,并给出具体位置或特征。答案不是在讲述音乐的故事,而是在分析音乐是如何构成的。
11. Timed Writing and Common Pitfalls | 限时写作与常见错误
In the exam, plan for about 3 to 5 minutes before writing. List the musical elements you will discuss, then write for 15 to 20 minutes, and leave 2 to 3 minutes to proofread. A short plan keeps your answer organised and prevents you from running out of time.
考试中,动笔前先花约 3 到 5 分钟写提纲。列出你将讨论的音乐要素,然后写作 15 到 20 分钟,再留 2 到 3 分钟检查。简短的提纲能让答案有条理,也能避免时间不够。
Common pitfalls include: using vague language such as “nice” or “sad”; writing about the story or scene instead of the music; giving no bar numbers or timings; focusing on only one element; and writing comparison essays piece by piece rather than feature by feature.
常见错误包括:使用“好听”或“悲伤”等模糊语言;写故事或场景而不是音乐;不给小节号或时间点;只围绕一个要素展开;比较题按乐曲逐一写,而不是按要素逐一比较。
Proofread for spelling, especially musical terms, and check that every paragraph answers the question. If a sentence does not add musical evidence, remove it.
检查拼写,尤其是音乐术语,并确认每个段落都在回答问题。如果某一句话没有增加音乐证据,就删掉它。
