IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy: Case Study Practical Drill | IGCSE

📚 IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy: Case Study Practical Drill | IGCSE

Case studies appear throughout the Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy syllabus, from ethics and political philosophy to epistemology and philosophy of mind. They test not only what you remember but how well you can apply, compare and evaluate philosophical ideas under timed conditions. This drill gives you a repeatable method and worked examples.

Case analysis questions often begin with a short scenario, quote or dilemma and then ask you to explain, apply, discuss or evaluate. Examiners use these questions to distinguish between candidates who only describe theories and those who can use them flexibly.

The scenario is not decoration; it supplies the key facts. Your first task is to identify the philosophical issue hidden in the case, such as whether a lie is ever justified, or whether we can know that other minds exist.

2. The Four-Step Drill for Any Case |

Use this repeatable sequence: Step 1 Identify the issue and key terms. Step 2 State two or more relevant theories or positions. Step 3 Apply each theory explicitly to the case, using its own concepts. Step 4 Evaluate by raising an objection, a counterexample or a strength.

Many answers fail because they skip Step 3 and write a general essay about a theory. In IGCSE Philosophy, application points are often where marks are awarded. Use phrases such as ‘A utilitarian would argue that…’ or ‘A deontologist would reject this because…’

3. Ethics Case Drill – The Trolley Variant |

A runaway trolley is heading towards five workers. You are standing by a lever: if you pull it, the trolley switches to a side track where one worker is trapped. You can either do nothing and let five die, or pull the lever and one dies.

A rule utilitarian may pull the lever because the general rule ‘save the greater number’ tends to maximise welfare. An act utilitarian calculates the specific consequences: five lives outweigh one. A Kantian deontologist, however, focuses on the maxim of your action – using the one worker as a means to save others, which may violate the categorical imperative.

A strength of utilitarianism here is that it gives a clear decision procedure. A weakness is that it seems to ignore individual rights and the distinction between letting die and killing. A deontologist may be accused of being too rigid when refusing to pull the lever, but this consistency protects human dignity.

4. Epistemology Case Drill – The Brain in a Vat |

Imagine your brain has been removed and placed in a vat of nutrients, connected to a supercomputer that feeds you the same experiences you have now. Can you know that you are not a brain in a vat?

A sceptic uses this case to argue that because your evidence would be identical in both the normal world and the vat world, you cannot have knowledge. A reliabilist replies that if your belief is caused by a reliable process, it can count as knowledge; the mere possibility of error does not destroy knowledge. A Cartesian foundationalist might search for an indubitable foundation such as ‘I think, therefore I am’.

The sceptical conclusion is logically possible but practically empty – we cannot live as if it were true. The reliabilist response is useful but may struggle to show that the process is reliable without circular reasoning.

5. Political Philosophy Case Drill – Taxation and Freedom |

A government raises income tax on high earners to fund free healthcare and education for all citizens. Some argue this is fair redistribution; others argue it is theft of private property.

A Rawlsian would support the policy if it satisfies the difference principle: inequalities are acceptable only if they improve the position of the least advantaged. A Nozickian libertarian would reject coercive taxation because it violates self-ownership and treats the state as a rights-violating agent. A utilitarian would ask whether the policy maximises overall happiness, not whether it is ‘fair’ in itself.

The case tests tensions between liberty and equality. Rawls gives a strong justification for redistribution but may underestimate individual liberty. Nozick protects liberty but offers little response to extreme poverty. Use this contrast to show evaluative balance.

6. Religious Philosophy Case Drill – The Problem of Evil |

A natural disaster kills thousands of innocent people. If God is omnipotent and omnibenevolent, why would such evil exist?

The logical problem argues that the set of beliefs ‘God is all-powerful, God is all-good, evil exists’ is inconsistent. An Augustinian theodicy claims evil is a privation of good, caused by free will and the fall; natural evil is a consequence of a broken order. An Irenaean theodicy argues evil is necessary for soul-making and the development of moral character.

The Augustinian reply may struggle to explain natural evil before human choice existed, and a perfect creation falling seems puzzling. The Irenaean reply gives a positive purpose to suffering, but not all suffering seems proportionate or character-building. A candidate who notes both strengths and weaknesses will score higher on evaluation.

7. Philosophy of Mind Case Drill – The Turing Test and Other Minds |

You chat online with an AI. Its answers are indistinguishable from a human. Does this show that the AI has a mind, or that you can know other minds exist?

A functionalist might say that if the AI has the right functional states and causal roles, it has a mind – at least in one sense. A behaviourist would say mental states are dispositions to behave, so passing the Turing test is strong evidence of mind. A property dualist might object that subjective experience, or qualia, could be absent even if behaviour is perfect.

The Turing test is a good operational test but may confuse simulation with genuine mentality. The Chinese room argument by Searle challenges this: syntactic manipulation of symbols does not produce semantic understanding. Use this to evaluate the limits of behavioural evidence.

8. Argument Analysis – Spotting Fallacies and Counterexamples |

Case-based questions often include arguments that you must evaluate. Learn to spot common flaws: ad hominem (attacking the person), straw man (misrepresenting a view), false dilemma (only two options when more exist), and slippery slope (unjustified chain of consequences).
