📚 IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy: High-Frequency Topics and Common Mistakes Analysis | IGCSE

In Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy, marks are won and lost in the way students move from describing a theory to testing it with examples. This article reviews the topics that appear most regularly and the common errors that separate a grade C from a grade A*.

1. Defining Philosophy and Arguments |

Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions through reasoned argument, not a collection of personal opinions. In the exam, a high-frequency one-mark question asks students to define ‘argument’ as a series of premises leading to a conclusion.

Many candidates lose a simple mark by writing ‘a reason’ instead of ‘a statement offered as evidence for another statement’. A strong definition separates the content of the belief from the logical structure that supports it.

  • Premise: a statement that provides support.
  • Conclusion: the statement supported by the premises.

2. Knowledge: Justified True Belief |

The tripartite definition of knowledge is ‘justified true belief’ (JTB). Candidates are often asked to explain why justification is needed by considering a lucky guess: the guess may be true, but it is not knowledge.

A frequent error is to add ‘certainty’ as a fourth condition and then claim that knowledge is impossible. The syllabus works with the standard JTB analysis and questions whether it is sufficient, not whether certainty is required.

Gettier cases show that JTB is not sufficient. Candidates often misdescribe Gettier as ‘false belief’, but in Gettier
