📚 IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy: High-Scorer Tips and Experience Sharing | IGCSE

In IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy, high marks do not go to students who simply memorise names and quotations. The examiners reward clear conceptual understanding, precise use of philosophical terms, and, above all, the ability to analyse and evaluate arguments. This article gathers practical strategies from top-scoring candidates so that you can turn your interest in philosophy into a consistent grade 9 performance.

1. Know the Syllabus and Assessment Objectives |

The first step is not reading a textbook from cover to cover. Top scorers begin by downloading the official Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy syllabus and highlight exactly what can be examined. You need to know the content topics, the command words such as ‘define’, ‘explain’, ‘compare’ and ‘evaluate’, and how marks are allocated across assessment objectives.

Most philosophy marking focuses on two key skills: AO1 Knowledge and Understanding, and AO2 Analysis and Evaluation. AO1 means accurately explaining concepts and theories, while AO2 means exploring strengths, weaknesses, implications and alternative views. Many candidates lose marks because they write excellent AO1 descriptions but never move into AO2 evaluation.

2. Build a Precise Terminology Bank |

Philosophy is a subject where a single word such as ‘valid’, ‘sound’, ‘a priori’ or ‘relativism’ carries a technical meaning. Top students create a personal glossary with definitions in their own words, one example, and one non-example or common misunderstanding for each term.

Do not just learn dictionary definitions. You must be able to use terms in context. For example, writing ‘the argument is valid but not sound’ is meaningless unless you can explain that validity concerns logical form, while soundness also requires true premises.

例如,写出 ‘the argument is valid but not sound’ 是没有意义的,除非你能解释 validity 关注逻辑形式,而 soundness 还要求前提为真。

Exam questions often ask you to explain a key concept before evaluating a theory. If your initial definition is vague or ambiguous, the examiner will not trust the rest of your essay. Therefore, practise defining ten core terms from memory at the start of every revision session.

3. Reconstruct Arguments Before You Criticise |

A very common mistake in philosophy essays is criticising a position the philosopher never held. High-scoring candidates always follow a two-step pattern: first reconstruct the argument fairly and charitably, then evaluate it. This shows the examiner that you understand the structure of reasoning, not just the conclusion.

Suppose you are asked to evaluate utilitarianism. Before attacking it, write a brief reconstruction: ‘Act utilitarianism states that an action is right if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. It is consequentialist because it judges actions by outcomes, and hedonistic because it identifies happiness with pleasure.’ Only after this clear reconstruction should you evaluate objections such as the problem of minority rights.

When reconstructing, use phrases like ‘P1’, ‘P2’ and ‘C’ if your teacher encourages structure, but always explain the premises in full sentences. This prevents you from hiding a weak interpretation behind shorthand.

4. Use PEEL for Evaluative Paragraphs | 用 PEEL 写评估性段落

Top candidates do not write ‘for and against’ lists. They build evaluative paragraphs using a modified PEEL structure: Point, Evidence or Example, Evaluation, Link. The evaluation layer is what turns a descriptive answer into an analytical one.

他们使用改良的 PEEL 结构来构建评估性段落:Point(论点)、Evidence or Example(证据或例子)、Evaluation(评估)、Link(
