📚 IGCSE CCEA Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answer | IGCSE CCEA
Writing a high-scoring philosophy essay in IGCSE CCEA is not about simply listing what philosophers have said. Examiners look for a clear line of argument, accurate use of philosophical concepts, balanced treatment of opposing views and a justified conclusion. This guide provides a practical essay framework and a full model answer to show how these skills work together.
1. Understanding the CCEA Philosophy Question | 理解 CCEA 哲学论文题目
Most CCEA-style philosophy questions use command words such as ‘Evaluate’, ‘Discuss’ or ‘Assess’. A question beginning with ‘Evaluate’ asks you to judge the strengths and weaknesses of a claim, not merely to describe it. You must reach a reasoned verdict.
Before planning, underline the key concepts and the precise claim being made. For example, ‘Evaluate the claim that the problem of evil proves that God does not exist’ contains the concepts ‘problem of evil’, ‘proves’ and ‘God does not exist’. Your essay must address all three rather than drift into a general discussion of suffering.
2. The PEEEL Paragraph Structure | PEEEL
Strong body paragraphs in CCEA philosophy essays can be built using PEEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Evaluation and Link. This structure ensures that each paragraph advances an argument rather than just reporting information.
The table below summarises the five stages. Use it as a checklist when writing each paragraph.
| Stage | What to do | Example phrase |
| Point | State the argument in one sentence. | The logical problem of evil claims that the existence of any evil is incompatible with an all-powerful, all-loving God. |
| Evidence | Introduce a philosopher, theory or example. | Epicurus formulated this tension as a set of questions about God’s power and goodness. |
| Explanation | Unpack how the evidence supports the point. | If God cannot prevent evil, God is not omnipotent; if God will not prevent evil, God is not perfectly good. |
| Evaluation | Judge the strength or weakness of the argument. | This argument is strong because it identifies a real logical tension, but it may rely on a narrow definition of omnipotence. |
| Link | Return to the question. | Therefore, if the logical problem holds, it would prove that God cannot exist. |
Chinese translation of the table:
3. Constructing an Introduction |
A focused introduction should define the key terms, make clear the claim under discussion and signpost the direction of the essay. It does not need to be long, but it must show that you understand the question.
For the question on evil, a strong introduction could be: ‘The problem of evil challenges belief in an all-powerful, all-loving God. In this essay, I will evaluate the claim that evil proves God does not exist. I will examine the logical and evidential versions of the problem, consider the free-will defence and the soul-making response, and argue that while evil creates a serious challenge, it does not conclusively disprove God’s existence.’ This introduction defines the issue, explains the structure and states the intended conclusion.
4. Building the For and Against Case |
High-scoring essays present both sides fairly. You should plan at least two arguments for the claim and two arguments against it. Before criticising an opposing view, state its strongest possible version; this is known as the principle of charity.
A balanced body might be organised like this:
- Argument 1 for the claim: the logical problem of evil —
- Argument 2 for the claim: the evidential problem of evil —
- Argument 1 against the claim: Plantinga’s free-will defence —
- Argument 2 against the claim: Hick’s soul-making theodicy —
- Overall evaluation —
This structure prevents a one-sided essay and shows the examiner that you can handle complexity.
5. Using Philosophical Language Precisely |
CCEA philosophy essays reward precise use of technical vocabulary. Terms such as ‘omnipotent’, ‘omniscient’, ‘omnibenevolent’, ‘a priori’, ‘a posteriori’, ‘contingent’, ‘necessary’, ‘moral evil’ and ‘natural evil’ should be used consistently and correctly.
For example, the logical problem of evil is an a priori argument because it claims that the existence of God and the existence of evil are logically incompatible. The evidential problem is a posteriori because it relies on our experience of the amount and intensity of suffering in the world.
Avoid vague phrases such as ‘I think’ or ‘in my opinion’. Instead, use ‘this argument shows’, ‘one weakness is’ or ‘a possible reply is’. This makes evaluation sound analytical rather than personal.
6. Evaluation and Counter-Counter Arguments |
Evaluation is what separates top-band answers from middle-band answers. To evaluate, you need to say why an argument is strong or weak, then consider whether the weakness can be answered. This is sometimes called a counter-counter argument.
For example, after presenting the free-will defence, you might write: ‘A weakness of the free-will defence is that it only addresses moral evil, not natural evil such as earthquakes. However, a defender of the free-will defence could reply that natural evil is a consequence of the broken natural order caused by human misuse of free will, although this reply is less persuasive when applied to suffering before humans existed.’
This move shows the examiner that you are not simply repeating arguments but are actively testing them.
7. Writing a Balanced Conclusion |
A conclusion should directly answer the question, summarise the strongest considerations on both sides and state which side is more convincing. It should not introduce new arguments or evidence.
A balanced conclusion for the evil question might be: ‘In conclusion, the logical problem of evil fails to prove God’s non-existence because the free-will defence shows that God and moral evil are not logically incompatible. The evidential problem is more powerful, since the scale of suffering appears excessive for any plausible soul-making purpose. Nevertheless, to prove that God does not exist requires a deductive proof, and the evidential argument only shows that God’s existence is less probable. Therefore, the claim is not fully established.’
Notice that the conclusion uses the word ‘therefore’, which signals a final judgement based on earlier reasoning.
8. Common Mistakes to Avoid |
The following mistakes often prevent students from reaching the top band. Avoiding them will immediately improve the quality of your essay.
- Describing arguments without evaluating them.
- Ignoring the opposing side entirely. —
- Making assertions without reasons or examples. —
- Writing an unstructured answer with no clear paragraphs. —
- Failing to define key terms such as ‘evil’ or ‘omnipotence’. —
- Using evaluative language without justifying it, such as ‘this argument is weak’ without explaining why. —
If you proofread with this list in mind, you can catch most of these errors before submitting your essay.
9. Model Essay Question and Introduction |
The following model answer responds to the question: ‘Evaluate the claim that the problem of evil proves that God does not exist.’ It is written in a CCEA style and annotated in the sections that follow.
Model introduction: The problem of evil is one of the most serious objections to belief in an all-powerful, all-loving God. The claim under discussion is that the existence of evil proves that God does not exist. To evaluate this claim, I will first outline the logical problem of evil and the evidential problem of evil. I will then consider two major responses: Plantinga’s free-will defence and Hick’s soul-making theodicy. I will argue that although the evidential problem is a strong challenge, the claim that evil proves God’s non-existence is too strong, because the logical problem is successfully answered and the evidential problem only reduces probability, not possibility.
10. Model Essay: Main Body and Evaluation |
Point 1 for the claim – the logical problem: The logical problem of evil argues that the existence of any evil is logically incompatible with the existence of a God who is both omnipotent and omnibenevolent. If God is all-powerful, God could prevent evil; if God is all-loving, God would want to prevent evil. Yet evil exists. Therefore, an all-powerful, all-loving God cannot exist. This is a deductive argument: if its premises are true, the conclusion necessarily follows.
Point 2 for the claim – the evidential problem: Even if God and evil are not logically incompatible, the sheer amount and intensity of evil in the world makes God’s existence unlikely. William Rowe uses the example of a fawn dying painfully in a forest fire: no greater good seems to justify this suffering. Since an all-loving God would not permit pointless suffering, the existence of such apparently pointless evil is strong evidence against God’s existence.
Point 1 against the claim – Plantinga’s free-will defence: Alvin Plantinga argues that it is logically impossible for God to create free beings who always freely choose good, because a free act cannot be causally determined. Since free will is a great good that makes genuine love and moral choice possible, God is justified in allowing moral evil. Therefore, God and moral evil are not logically incompatible, and the logical problem of evil fails.
Point 2 against the claim – Hick’s soul-making theodicy: John Hick, developing Irenaeus, argues that the world is a place of soul-making, where human beings develop virtues such as courage, compassion and patience through facing suffering. Natural evil is necessary for this process because it provides a stable environment in which moral choices can be made. Without suffering, there would be no opportunity for real spiritual growth.
Evaluation: Plantinga’s free-will defence is widely regarded as successful against the logical problem, because it shows that God and moral evil can coexist without contradiction. However, its main weakness is that it says little about natural evil. Hick’s soul-making theodicy addresses natural evil, but it struggles to justify extreme or apparently pointless suffering: the death of a child from cancer seems to produce more harm than spiritual good. Furthermore, the evidential argument does not need to prove that God cannot exist; it only needs to show that God’s existence is unlikely. Yet the claim being evaluated says that evil proves God does not exist. Since ‘prove’ implies a deductive proof, and the evidential argument is at best inductive, the claim is too strong.
11. Model Essay: Conclusion and Self-Assessment |
Model conclusion: In conclusion, the logical problem of evil does not prove that God does not exist, because Plantinga’s free-will defence shows that God and moral evil are not logically incompatible. The evidential problem is a stronger challenge, since the scale and intensity of suffering make it difficult to reconcile with an all-loving God. Nevertheless, an inductive argument from evil can only make God’s existence less probable, not disprove it. Therefore, the claim that the problem of evil proves that God does not exist is not fully established, although it remains a powerful reason for doubting traditional theism.
Before submitting your essay, use this self-assessment checklist: Does the introduction define the key terms and signpost the argument? Does each body paragraph use PEEEL? Are both sides of the argument presented fairly? Is there at least one counter-counter argument? Does the conclusion directly answer the question? Is philosophical vocabulary used accurately and consistently?
