1. The Sociological Approach |

Sociology is the systematic study of society, social groups, and social interaction. It aims to understand how human behaviour is shaped by social structures and how individuals, in turn, create and change society through social action.

Key concepts include culture, norms, values, roles, status, and identity. Culture is the whole way of life of a group; norms are specific rules of behaviour; values are general beliefs about what is desirable; roles are expected patterns of behaviour attached to a status.

  • Culture – the shared way of life of a society. /
  • Norms – unwritten rules that guide everyday behaviour. /
  • Values – wider principles about what is good or bad. /
  • Status – a social position, which may be ascribed or achieved. /
  • Identity – how individuals see themselves and how others see them.

Sociologists distinguish between social structures, such as class, gender, and ethnicity, and social processes, such as socialisation and labelling. Both are central to CCEA questions that ask you to explain how society works.

2. Socialisation and Identity |

Socialisation is the lifelong process by which individuals learn the culture of their society. It is divided into primary socialisation, which occurs mainly in the family during early childhood, and secondary socialisation, which takes place through education, peer groups, media, religion, and the workplace.

Primary socialisation teaches basic language, norms, and values. Secondary socialisation builds on this by introducing more formal and impersonal rules, such as those found in schools and workplaces.

Agents of socialisation include the family, education, peer group, mass media, religion, and workplace. Each agent transmits different norms and values, and they can sometimes conflict, for example when peer group norms differ from family values.

The nature versus nurture debate is important in sociology. Sociologists emphasise nurture: behaviour is learned through socialisation rather than fixed by biology. However, they acknowledge that biological factors can interact with social factors.

Identity is formed through socialisation. Social identity includes aspects such as gender identity, class identity, ethnic identity, and national identity. A person may have multiple identities that change over time.

3. Sociological Perspectives |

Sociological perspectives are broad frameworks for understanding society. The main perspectives you need for CCEA are functionalism, Marxism, feminism, and interactionism. Each offers different explanations of social order, conflict, and change.

Functionalism sees society as a system of interconnected parts that work together to create stability. Key ideas include value consensus, social solidarity, and the organic analogy. Functionalists argue that institutions such as the family and education perform positive functions for society.

Marxism sees society as based on class conflict between the bourgeoisie, who own the means of production, and the proletariat, who sell their labour. Marxists argue that social institutions reproduce class inequality and serve the interests of the ruling class.

Feminism focuses on gender inequality and patriarchy. Feminist sociologists examine how social structures and norms maintain male dominance in areas such as the family, education, work, and media.

Interactionism focuses on small-scale interactions and the meanings individuals attach to social life. Key concepts include labelling, the self, and the definition of the situation. Interactionists argue that social reality is constructed through everyday interaction.

Functionalism Consensus and stability Value consensus, functions, organic analogy
Marxism Class conflict and inequality Bourgeoisie, proletariat, ideology
Feminism Gender inequality Patriarchy, gender roles, sexism
Interactionism Micro-level meaning and action Labelling, self-concept, definition of situation

When answering exam questions, you should be able to compare these perspectives. For example, functionalism and Marxism are both structural theories, but functionalism sees consensus while Marxism sees conflict as the basis of society.

4. Research Methods |

Sociological research methods are the tools sociologists use to collect and analyse data. They can be divided into primary and secondary methods, and into quantitative and qualitative methods.

Primary data are collected by the researcher for a specific purpose, such as questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Secondary data already exist and include official statistics, documents, and previous studies.

Quantitative data are numerical and allow for statistical analysis. Qualitative data are non-numerical and provide depth and detail. Sociologists often combine methods to improve validity and reliability.

Primary, quantitative Reliable, easy to repeat, large samples Low response rate, low validity, inflexible
Interviews / 访谈 Primary, qualitative or quantitative In-depth data, flexibility Time-consuming, interviewer effect
Observation / 观察 Primary, qualitative Natural behaviour, high validity Hawthorne effect, ethical concerns
Secondary, quantitative Cheap, comparative, large scale May be biased, definitions can change

Sampling is important in sociological research. Common sampling techniques include random sampling, stratified sampling, snowball sampling, and quota sampling. A representative sample allows generalisations to the wider population.

Ethical issues must be considered. Researchers should obtain informed consent, protect participants from harm, ensure anonymity and confidentiality, and avoid deception where possible.

Reliability refers to the consistency of results, while validity refers to how far the research measures what it claims to measure. Practical issues include time, cost, access, and researcher skill.

5. Social Stratification |

Social stratification refers to the way society is organised into layers or strata, based on factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, and age. It leads to unequal life chances, meaning differences in access to wealth, income, health, education, and opportunities.

Social class is a central form of stratification. Sociologists often use occupation to measure class. The Registrar General’s scale and the National Statistics Socio-economic Classification are common ways of categorising class positions.

Gender stratification refers to inequalities between men and women. Despite legal changes, women on average still earn less, do more domestic work, and are underrepresented in top positions.

Ethnic stratification refers to inequalities between ethnic groups. Some minority ethnic groups face disadvantages in employment, housing, and education, which can be explained by racism, discrimination, and structural factors.

Age stratification highlights how age affects status and power. Young people and older people may face ageism, and both groups can be stereotyped as dependent or less competent.

Sociological explanations of stratification include functionalist, Marxist, and Weberian approaches. Functionalists argue stratification rewards talent and ensures the most able fill important roles. Marxists see stratification as a product of class exploitation. Weberians identify class, status, and party as three distinct dimensions.

6. Family | 家庭

The family is a primary agent of socialisation and a key social institution. CCEA questions often ask about family types, changing patterns, and the functions of the family.

Family types include the nuclear family, extended family, lone-parent family, reconstituted family, and same-sex family. The nuclear family consists of two generations living together, while the extended family includes other relatives.

Functionalists, such as George Murdock and Talcott Parsons, argue that the family performs essential functions: reproduction, primary socialisation, emotional support, and economic provision. Parsons also distinguishes between instrumental and expressive roles.

Marxist and feminist perspectives criticise the family. Marxists argue the family supports capitalism by reproducing labour and promoting consumerism. Feminists argue the family can be a site of patriarchy and gender inequality.

Changing patterns include rising divorce rates, declining marriage rates, increasing cohabitation, more births outside marriage, and more lone-parent families. These changes are linked to legal reforms, changing attitudes, secularisation, and women’s increased economic independence.

Conjugal roles may be segregated or joint. The symmetrical family, described by Young and Willmott, is one in which husbands and wives share domestic tasks and decision-making more equally.

7. Education | 教育

Education is a major secondary agent of socialisation and a key institution in modern societies. Sociologists study its functions, achievements, and the ways it may reproduce inequality.

Functionalists argue that education socialises young people into shared norms and values, teaches specialist skills, and allocates roles through meritocratic selection. Durkheim emphasised moral education and social solidarity; Parsons saw school as a bridge between family and society.

Marxists, such as Bowles and Gintis, argue that education reproduces class inequality through the hidden curriculum and the correspondence principle. Schools teach obedience, punctuality, and acceptance of hierarchy, which mirror capitalist workplaces.

Educational achievement differs by class, gender, and ethnicity. Working-class pupils, some minority ethnic groups, and boys in certain contexts may underachieve. Explanations include material deprivation, cultural deprivation, teacher labelling, and streaming.

Material deprivation refers to lack of money, resources, and living conditions that can harm learning. Cultural deprivation refers to lack of knowledge, attitudes, and language valued by the education system.

Educational reforms, including marketisation, league tables, and parental choice, have changed schools. Some sociologists argue these policies increase competition but may widen inequalities.

8. Crime and Deviance |

Deviance is behaviour that breaks social norms, while crime is behaviour that breaks formal written laws. Not all deviance is criminal, and not all crime is seen as equally deviant across all cultures and times.

Social control is maintained through formal agents, such as the police, courts, and prisons, and informal agents, such as family, peers, and community. Both work to ensure conformity to norms and laws.

Official crime statistics come from police-recorded crime, but they may not show the full picture. Alternatives include victim surveys, such as the Crime Survey for England and Wales, and self-report studies.

Patterns of crime vary by age, gender, class, and ethnicity. Young men, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, are overrepresented in official statistics. However, statistics may reflect policing and reporting practices as well as offending.
