1. Assessment Overview |

WJEC IGCSE Art and Design is assessed through two components. Component 1 is the Portfolio, worth 60% of the total mark, and Component 2 is the Externally Set Assignment, worth 40%. The portfolio is produced during the course, while the externally set assignment includes a preparatory period followed by a 10-hour sustained focus examination.

WJEC IGCSE

Because the portfolio carries more weight, consistent coursework throughout the year is more important than a single final exam. However, the externally set assignment can still raise or lower your overall grade significantly, so both components need equal care.

Component Weighting Description
Component 1: Portfolio 60% Coursework portfolio showing a range of skills and personal development
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment 40% Preparatory studies and a 10-hour timed final outcome

2. Assessment Objectives |

WJEC Art and Design uses four assessment objectives, each worth 25%. AO1 requires you to develop ideas through investigations and show critical understanding of sources. AO2 requires you to refine work by exploring ideas and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes.

AO3 focuses on recording ideas, observations and insights relevant to your intentions as the work progresses. AO4 focuses on presenting a personal and meaningful response that realises your intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language. Markers look for evidence of all four objectives across both components.

You should label or annotate your work to show which AO it supports. This makes it easier for the examiner to award marks and helps you check that your portfolio is balanced.

3. Mark Band Descriptors |

Examiners use mark band descriptors to judge the quality of your evidence. Typical bands move from limited, basic and competent to confident and sophisticated. Each band describes the degree of skill, control, research, experimentation and personal response shown.

Band Typical Features
Limited Little control, weak research, unclear intentions, unfinished or copied work
Basic Some control, limited experimentation, basic recording, simple personal response
Competent Reasonable control, relevant experimentation, clear recording, sound personal response
Confident Good control, consistent experimentation, strong recording, personal and meaningful response
Sophisticated Excellent control, innovative experimentation, insightful recording, highly personal and mature response

To move up a band, improve your weakest assessment objective rather than repeating what you already do well. Balanced evidence across AO1 to AO4 usually earns a higher mark than one exceptional area with weak others.

4. Portfolio Planning |

A strong portfolio is not just a collection of finished pieces. It should show the journey from initial idea to final outcome, including mind maps, sketches, photographs, material tests, observational drawings and evaluative notes. Select work that demonstrates range, not repetition.

Organise your portfolio in a logical order. Start with your theme or starting points, move through research and experimentation, then end with the final response. Every page should have a clear purpose linked to at least one assessment objective.

  • Show direct observation drawings, not only photographs
  • Include experiments with a variety of media such as pencil, ink, acrylic, collage, digital, printmaking or textiles
  • Keep unsuccessful tests and explain what you learned from them
  • Use annotation to link experiments to your chosen artists

5. Externally Set Assignment Preparation |

The externally set assignment gives you a range of starting points, themes or briefs set by the exam board. You choose one starting point and develop a personal response during the preparatory period. This period is not a quick sketch; it should be a mini-project with research, experiments and planning.

Read the whole starting point before choosing. Underline key words and generate a mind map of personal connections. Choose a direction that gives you enough visual material and personal interest to sustain a 10-hour final piece.

Your preparatory work should include at least three artist or designer studies, several material experiments, observational drawings and a clear plan for your final outcome. Annotate how each study influenced your ideas.

6. Annotation Skills |

Annotation is a key skill in WJEC Art and Design. It explains what you did, why you did it and what you learned. Use art vocabulary such as line, tone, texture, composition, perspective, scale, form, colour, contrast and balance. Avoid writing long descriptive paragraphs about the surface of the work only.

Good annotation links the practical work to your research and to your personal intentions. For example, you might write: ‘I used tonal charcoal layering to create a sense of isolation, inspired by the dramatic lighting in Rembrandt’s portraits. This led me to simplify my background and focus on the face.’

Write annotation as you go, not after the page is finished. Short notes next to tests and drawings are more useful than long essays at the end. Use the first person and be honest about what worked and what did not.

7. Drawing and Recording Skills |

Drawing from direct observation is central to AO3 and is often the quickest way to show your recording skills. Draw from real objects, people, spaces or natural forms rather than copying photographs taken from the internet. Primary observation gives your work authenticity and originality.

Use a range of drawing approaches: continuous line, blind contour, tonal studies, cross-hatching, gesture drawing, enlargement and mixed media. Each approach should be labelled and connected to your theme. Photograph your drawing process at different stages to provide evidence of progress.

Recording is not limited to drawing. It can include photography, printmaking, collage, digital manipulation, sculpture or textiles. The key is that the recording is relevant to your intention and helps you develop the final outcome.

8. Using Artist and Contextual References |

Artist research supports AO1 and should not be treated as a collection of pasted pictures with a short biography. Study the artist’s materials, techniques, composition, colour palette and ideas. Explain how the artist’s approach connects to your own work or how you adapted it.

Choose artists from different periods, styles or cultures when possible. For example, comparing a Renaissance study of drapery with a contemporary textile installation can show broader contextual understanding and feed more original experimentation.

When you make an artist-inspired study, avoid copying directly. Change the subject, scale, colour or technique to show that you understand the principle rather than imitate the image. Write a short note explaining your adaptation.

9. Time Management in the 10-Hour Exam | 10

The 10-hour sustained focus examination is your opportunity to produce the final outcome planned in your preparatory work. You cannot bring in a finished piece, but you may bring your preparatory studies, materials and a clear plan. Arrive with your materials organised and your final idea fully resolved.

Divide the 10 hours into stages: the first hour for setting up and warm-up, about seven hours for the main outcome, one hour for refinement and the final hour for mounting, cleaning and final checks. Write this timeline on the first page of your plan.

Work at a steady pace and do not start over halfway through. If something goes wrong, solve the problem within your plan rather than abandoning the whole piece. Examiners reward sustained focus and resilience, not panic changes.

10. Presentation and Mounting |

Presentation affects how examiners read your work. Mount 2D pieces neatly on plain card or paper, avoid creased edges and fingerprints, and ensure all pages are in order. 3D pieces should be photographed from several angles with a plain background.

Use a consistent layout for your portfolio, with clearly labelled sections. Do not overcrowd pages with too many images, but do include enough work to show depth. Captions can help examiners understand the sequence of your ideas.

For digitally produced work, print it at high resolution and include screen captures of your process. For large pieces, include a photograph of the whole work and a detail shot. Presentation should never distract from the content.

11. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见失分点与避免方法

One common pitfall is relying too heavily on internet images or copying other people’s work. This weakens AO3 and AO4 because it shows little personal recording or meaningful response. Always return to primary observation and your own photographs.

Another pitfall is weak annotation. Pages full of images with no explanation leave the examiner guessing about your decisions. Write short, focused notes that name the techniques, artists and intentions behind each study.

Unfinished work is a serious problem, especially in the 10-hour exam. A smaller, fully resolved piece usually scores higher than a large, incomplete one. Plan your scale realistically and leave time for evaluation.

12. Final Checklist Before Submission |

Before you submit your portfolio and externally set assignment, use a checklist to make sure all four assessment objectives are covered. Check that you have clear evidence of idea development, media experimentation, observational recording and a personal final response.

  • All pages labelled with your name, candidate number and component title
  • Portfolio order logical and easy to follow
  • AO1 shown through artist research and idea development
  • AO2 shown through varied media experiments and refinements
  • AO3 shown through observational drawings, photographs and records
  • AO4 shown through a final outcome and evaluation
  • No loose, torn or damaged pages
  • All digital files backed up and printed where required

Finally, read the mark band descriptors one more time and decide honestly which band your current evidence fits. Focus your remaining time on the weakest assessment objective rather than trying to perfect work that is already strong.
