The practical assessment usually requires you to plan, manufacture and evaluate a product from a given brief or design specification. Marks are awarded for process as well as for the final outcome.

Select the correct tool for the material. For metals, use a hacksaw with the correct blade pitch; for plastics, use a fine-tooth saw to avoid cracking; for wood, use a tenon saw or coping saw for straight or curved cuts.

Leave about 1 mm of waste beyond the finished line when sawing. Then file, sand or plane back to the line to achieve an accurate edge. This is called roughing out and finishing.
