📚 IGCSE WJEC Media Studies: Formula & Theory Rapid Revision Handbook | IGCSE WJEC
This rapid revision handbook condenses the essential theories, terminology and quantitative formulas required for IGCSE WJEC Media Studies. Use it to check your understanding of media language, narrative, audience, industry and representation before the exam.
1. Media Language & Semiotics |
Semiotics is the study of signs. Roland Barthes argued that media texts communicate through a two-level system: a sign consists of a signifier (the physical form) and a signified (the mental concept).
Barthes also distinguished denotation (the literal meaning) from connotation (the cultural or ideological meaning). A red rose denotes a flower, but connotes romance and passion.
Sign = Signifier + Signified
Formula: Sign = Signifier + Signified. Meaning is produced when the audience connects the signifier to a culturally learned signified.
|---|---|---|
| Signifier | 能指 | The physical form, such as a sound, image or word. |
| Signified | 所指 | The mental concept evoked by the signifier. |
| Denotation | 外延 | Literal, dictionary meaning. |
| Connotation | 内涵 | Cultural or ideological meaning. |
When analysing a text, always identify the signifier first, then explain the possible signified and connotation for a specific audience.
2. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium |
Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most narratives follow a five-stage movement from stability to disruption and back to a new stability.
Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium
This narrative formula helps you analyse plot structure in advertising, films, newspapers and video games.
|---|---|---|
| Equilibrium | 平衡 | A stable, ordered world is introduced. |
| Disruption | 破坏 | An event or villain disturbs the order. |
| Recognition | 认知 | Characters realise the disruption. |
| Attempt to Repair | 尝试修复 | The protagonist acts to solve the problem. |
| New Equilibrium | 新平衡 | Order is restored, but often with change. |
Remember that not every text completes all five stages; some texts leave disruption unresolved to create suspense or realism.
3. Propp’s Character Functions |
Vladimir Propp studied Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character functions. These functions can be applied to many media narratives, from superhero films to advertisements.
Narrative Roles = Hero + Villain + Princess + Donor + Dispatcher + Helper + False Hero
Use Propp’s model to identify how characters drive the action. A single character may fulfil more than one function, and some functions may be absent or modified.
| Character Function | 中文角色功能 | Typical Role in Media |
|---|---|---|
| Hero | 英雄 | Seeks something, defeats the villain, restores order. |
| Villain | 反派 | Creates conflict, opposes the hero. |
| Princess | 公主 | The reward or person to be rescued; often represents a goal. |
| Donor | 赠予者 | Gives the hero a magical object or advice. |
| Dispatcher | 派遣者 | Sends the hero on the quest. |
| Helper | 助手 | Supports the hero during the quest. |
| False Hero | 伪英雄 | Appears good but is later exposed as bad. |
WJEC essays often reward analysis that names the Proppian role and explains how media language constructs that role for the audience.
4. Levi-Strauss Binary Oppositions |
Claude Levi-Strauss argued that stories are organised around conflicts between opposing concepts, such as good versus evil, young versus old, urban versus rural.
Meaning = Opposition A versus Opposition B
Binary oppositions are useful for analysing how media texts create ideological meaning and position the audience. Often one side of the opposition is privileged over the other.
- Good vs evil
- Nature vs technology
- Male vs female
- East vs West
- Tradition vs modernity
When answering exam questions, identify at least two binary oppositions and explain which side the text appears to favour. This shows understanding of ideological positioning.
5. Genre Theory & Neale’s Formula |
Steve Neale argues that genre is a process of ‘repetition and difference’. Successful media products repeat familiar conventions but add variation to keep audiences interested.
Genre = Repetition + Difference
Conventions include iconography, setting, narrative patterns, character types and style. WJEC questions often ask you to identify how a set product follows or challenges genre conventions.
|---|---|---|
| Iconography | 图像符号 | Guns in action films, test tubes in sci-fi. |
| Setting | 场景 | Dark streets in crime drama. |
| Narrative pattern | 叙事模式 | Chase and capture in thrillers. |
| Character type | 角色类型 | Hard-boiled detective in noir. |
| Style | 风格 | High-key lighting in sitcoms, low-key in horror. |
When a product mixes genres, describe it as a hybrid genre and explain the appeal of combining familiar codes in a new way.
6. Audience Theory: Uses and Gratifications |
Blumler and Katz proposed that audiences actively choose media to meet four needs: diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance.
Audience Use = Diversion + Personal Relationships + Personal Identity + Surveillance
Use this framework to explain why different audiences might respond differently to the same media text. The same product can satisfy multiple needs at once.
