Winter Intensive Revision Plan for IGCSE WJEC Sociology | IGCSE WJEC

📚 Winter Intensive Revision Plan for IGCSE WJEC Sociology | IGCSE WJEC

A winter break can look short, but it is long enough to turn a shaky understanding of IGCSE WJEC Sociology into a confident, exam-ready command of the course. This plan gives you a six-week structure that mixes content review, source skills and past-paper practice.

Sociology is not just about memorising names and studies. It asks you to explain social patterns, use key concepts precisely, evaluate evidence and link theory to real examples. A winter revision plan should therefore train both knowledge and application.

1. Why a Winter Revision Plan Works |

A winter break is not a long holiday from sociology; it is a controlled revision window. Without the pressure of daily classes, you can rebuild your notes, test your memory and fill knowledge gaps before the final push.

Spaced repetition matters more than one long study day. Revising a topic for 25 minutes today, then again in two days and a week later, moves ideas from short-term to long-term memory far better than cramming.

An intensive plan also reduces anxiety. When you can see exactly what to revise each day, you stop worrying about where to start and start turning weak areas into strengths.

2. Know Your WJEC Sociology Specification | 熟悉 WJEC 社会学考纲

Start by printing or downloading the official WJEC IGCSE Sociology specification. Highlight every key concept, theory and named study that appears in the content sections, because exam questions are built directly from these points.

Pay attention to command words such as describe, explain, analyse and evaluate. Each command word signals a different skill, and knowing the difference will immediately improve the quality of your answers.

Also note the weighting of each topic and question type. If research methods and key concepts carry more marks, they deserve more of your revision time than a minor case study.

3. Week 1: Core Concepts and Key Terms |

Build a glossary of core sociological terms first: norms, values, roles, culture, socialisation, identity, status, social class, gender and ethnicity. Write a precise definition and one example for each term.

Flashcards work well for concept recall. On one side write the term, and on the other write the definition, an example and one link to a WJEC topic such as family, education or crime.

Do not just memorise definitions. Try to say how two concepts connect, for example how socialisation transmits both norms and values, or how status can be ascribed or achieved.

4. Week 2: Socialisation, Culture and Identity |

Review the agents of socialisation: family, education, peer group, media, religion and workplace. For each agent, list the norms and values it transmits and give a concrete example.

Distinguish primary socialisation from secondary socialisation. Primary socialisation occurs mainly in the family during early childhood, while secondary socialisation continues through school, peers and media.

The nature versus nurture debate is central to this topic. Be ready to argue that culture and socialisation shape much of human behaviour, without ignoring biological influences.

5. Week 3: Families and Households |

Learn the main family types: nuclear, extended, lone-parent, reconstituted, single-person and same-sex families. Know the difference between a family and a household, since students often confuse the two.

Compare functionalist, Marxist and feminist views of the family. Functionalists see the family as meeting social needs; Marxists see it as helping capitalism; feminists stress unequal gender roles.

Use statistics on marriage, divorce and cohabitation to explain recent changes. You need to describe patterns and suggest reasons for them, such as secularisation, gender equality and changing laws.

6. Week 4: Education and Social Inequality |

Revise the functions of education from functionalist and Marxist perspectives. Functionalists focus on socialisation and role allocation, while Marxists focus on social control and the hidden curriculum.

Explain class, gender and ethnic differences in educational achievement. Use concepts such as material deprivation, cultural deprivation, labelling and the self-fulfilling prophecy.

Do not just describe patterns of inequality. Evaluate policies such as compensatory education, marketisation or targeted support, and discuss whether they reduce or reproduce inequality.

7. Week 5: Crime, Deviance and Social Control |

Define crime, deviance and social control. Remember that deviance is not always criminal, and crime is not always seen as deviant, a common exam distinction.

Compare formal and informal social control. Formal control comes from laws, police and courts; informal control comes from family, peer pressure, religion and community norms.

Review key explanations of crime: functionalist ideas of anomie, subcultural theory, labelling theory and Marxist views on class and power. Be ready to evaluate each one with strengths and weaknesses.

8. Week 6: Research Methods and Data Skills |

Distinguish primary and secondary data, and quantitative and qualitative data. Know the strengths and limitations of each, and link them to reliability, validity, representativeness and ethics.

Use a methods table to compare questionnaires, interviews, observations, official statistics and documents. Focus on practical issues, ethical issues, reliability and validity.

May hide bias, not in-depth

Practise interpreting graphs, tables and statistical data. WJEC questions often ask you to identify a pattern, compare two groups and suggest a reason using sociological knowledge.

9. Exam Technique: Command Words and Paragraphs |

Learn exactly what common command words require. Describe asks what happens; explain asks why or how; analyse asks you to break something into parts; evaluate asks you to judge strengths and weaknesses.

Use a clear paragraph structure such as PEEEL: Point, Evidence, Explain, Evaluate, Link. This prevents vague answers and ensures every paragraph includes application and judgement.

Manage your time by mark allocation. If a question is worth 8 marks, spend no more than 12 minutes. Practise completing whole questions against a timer, not just writing open-ended notes.

10. Final Week: Mock, Mark and Improve |

Complete at least one full past paper under timed, exam-style conditions. Use the official mark scheme to mark your own work strictly, then identify the topics where you lost most marks.

Turn your mistakes into a short revision list. If you lost marks on evaluation, practise writing evaluative sentences for each key theory; if you lost marks on definitions, repeat your glossary tests.

Keep the final two days light. Re-read condensed notes, test a few flashcards and sleep well. A calm, focused mind on exam day beats a tired brain stuffed with last-minute facts.
