IGCSE WJEC Sociology: Speaking & Listening Exam Preparation | IGCSE WJEC

📚 IGCSE WJEC Sociology: Speaking & Listening Exam Preparation | IGCSE WJEC

In WJEC IGCSE Sociology, speaking and listening are not tested as a separate oral examination. However, they are central to sociological research methods, especially interviews, focus groups and the interpretation of spoken data. This revision guide explains how to prepare for questions that require you to understand verbal evidence, assess interview techniques and apply active listening concepts to sociological investigations.

1. Understanding Speaking and Listening in Sociology |

In sociology, ‘speaking’ refers to the way researchers and participants produce verbal data through interviews, oral histories and everyday conversation. ‘Listening’ is the researcher’s ability to interpret tone, pauses, emphasis and meaning in spoken responses. Together, they form the basis of qualitative methods that aim to understand social actors’ own meanings and experiences.

Sociologists working in the interpretivist tradition, such as those influenced by Max Weber, argue that spoken accounts allow researchers to achieve verstehen, or empathetic understanding. This is why WJEC questions often ask you to explain why spoken accounts may be more detailed than written questionnaires.

  • Verbal data: words, tone, pace and silence
  • Non-verbal cues: gestures, eye contact and body language
  • Listening bias: when the researcher hears only what they expect

You should link the richness of spoken data to rapport, probing and the flexibility of conversation. A written questionnaire cannot easily capture hesitation, emotion or the way a respondent changes their mind.

2. Sociological Interviews: Structured vs Unstructured |

Interviews are a primary method for collecting spoken data. A structured interview uses a fixed set of questions in the same order for every participant, while an unstructured interview is more like a guided conversation that allows the participant to lead the discussion.

Feature Structured interview Unstructured interview
Question format Fixed, standardised Flexible, open-ended
Researcher role Neutral reader of questions Active listener and prober
Data type Quantitative, comparable Qualitative, in-depth

In the exam, you may be given a short extract from an interview transcript. You need to identify whether it is structured or unstructured by looking at the interviewer’s prompts, the length of answers and whether the participant is free to raise new topics.

Remember that semi-structured interviews sit between the two types: they use a topic guide but allow follow-up questions. This gives a balance between comparability and depth, and it is often favoured by sociological researchers.

3. Active Listening in Fieldwork |

Active listening means giving full attention to the speaker, showing understanding and asking follow-up questions. Sociologists use it to build trust, access deeper meanings and encourage participants to talk freely about sensitive topics.

Key active listening techniques include summarising, reflecting feelings and using open prompts. These techniques signal that the researcher values the participant’s account and is not simply collecting data mechanically.

  • Summarising: ‘So what you are saying is…’
  • Reflecting: ‘It sounds like that was stressful.’
  • Probing: ‘What happened next?’

However, active listening also requires reflexivity. Researchers must be aware of how their own reactions, body language and assumptions might shape what participants say. In an exam answer, you can evaluate active listening by noting that it increases validity but may reduce standardisation.

4. Designing Interview Questions |

Good interview questions are clear, open-ended and free from leading language. A leading question pushes the participant towards a particular answer and therefore lowers the validity of the spoken data.

Leading: ‘Do you agree that school uniforms improve discipline?’ Neutral: ‘How do you feel about school uniforms?’ The first question assumes a relationship between uniforms and discipline, while the second allows a wider range of responses.

You should also avoid double-barrelled questions that ask two things at once, such as ‘Do you enjoy sociology and history?’ A participant might like one subject but not the other, making the answer difficult to interpret.

In WJEC exams, you may be asked to improve a poorly designed interview schedule. Look for emotive words, closed questions that only allow yes or no, and assumptions about the participant’s background.

5. Focus Groups and Group Discussions |

A focus group is a small group interview where participants discuss a topic together. The researcher acts as a moderator and listens for agreement, disagreement, shared norms and how participants justify their views in front of others.

Focus groups are useful for studying peer pressure, attitudes and social interaction. Because participants respond to each other, the spoken data can reveal how opinions are formed and challenged in a group context.

  • Strengths: natural interaction, quick data from many people, reveals group norms
  • Limitations: dominant speakers may silence others, peer pressure can reduce honesty

When evaluating a focus group extract, consider who speaks most, who remains silent and whether the moderator intervenes effectively. A skilled moderator should encourage quieter participants without putting words into their mouths.

6. Ethical Considerations in Verbal Data Collection |

When collecting spoken data, sociologists must follow ethical guidelines. Informed consent means participants know the purpose of the research, how their words will be used and that they agree to be recorded.

Confidentiality is especially important because voices can be identifiable. Researchers often use pseudonyms, remove identifying details and store recordings securely to protect participants.

Debriefing after an interview allows participants to ask questions, raise concerns and withdraw their data. In exam answers, you should link these ethical issues to the British Sociological Association guidelines and to the specific risks of using spoken evidence.

One ethical dilemma is that building rapport may lead participants to reveal more than they intended. The researcher must balance the need for rich data with the duty to protect participants from harm.

7. Transcription and Analysis of Spoken Data |

Transcription is the process of turning audio recordings into written text. Sociologists may include pauses, laughter and overlapping speech to capture the full meaning of an interaction.

When analysing spoken data, you can look for recurring themes, contradictions and the emotional tone of responses. A simple transcript extract can contain evidence about power, identity and social norms.
