Quantitative skills in coastal studies include measuring beach gradient, sediment size, wave frequency and rates of erosion. You will calculate averages, standard deviations, correlation coefficients and probabilities. Qualitative skills include classifying coastal landforms from photographs, describing the colour and shape of sediment, and evaluating the limitations of a field sketch.

You must decide which mathematical tool to apply and then support it with qualitative reasoning from the coastal context.

Always convert units before calculation. Coastal erosion rates are often given in metres per year (m yr⁻¹), wave heights in metres (m), sediment size in millimetres (mm) or phi units (φ), and beach gradient as a ratio such as 1:10 or as a percentage. You may also encounter wave period in seconds (s), wave frequency in hertz (Hz), and cross-sectional area in square metres (m²).

This conversion skill is regularly tested in Edexcel data-response questions where raw data must be standardised before plotting or comparing. For instance, sediment sizes measured in phi units must be converted to millimetres using the relationship φ = -log₂(D mm / 1 mm) if the question asks for a median size in millimetres.
