1. What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum? | 什么是电磁波谱?

Electromagnetic waves are a family of transverse waves that transfer energy from one place to another. Unlike sound waves, they do not need a medium, so they can travel through a vacuum. The complete range of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation is called the electromagnetic spectrum.

电磁波是一类传递能量的横波。与声波不同,它们不需要介质,因此可以在真空中传播。所有可能的电磁辐射频率的完整范围称为电磁波谱。

The spectrum includes everything from low-energy radio waves with long wavelengths to very high-energy gamma rays with extremely short wavelengths. Although these waves are very different, they all share the same fundamental nature.

2. Key Properties of Electromagnetic Waves | 电磁波的关键性质

All electromagnetic waves have three essential properties in common:

  • They are transverse waves – the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.
  • They transfer energy (and information) without transferring matter.
  • They all travel at the same speed in a vacuum: 3 × 10⁸ m/s (the speed of light).

  • 它们传递能量(和信息)而不传递物质。

These waves obey the general wave equation that links speed (v), frequency (f) and wavelength (λ):

Because the speed of all EM waves in a vacuum is constant, a wave with a higher frequency must have a shorter wavelength, and vice versa.

The electromagnetic spectrum is usually listed in order of increasing frequency (or decreasing wavelength). From lowest frequency to highest frequency, the seven groups are:
