After the Exam |

📚 After the Exam |

The moment you put down your pen, the exam is over. But the learning process is not. A strategic review of your performance can transform a finished paper into a powerful revision tool for your next assessment, especially in a subject like IGCSE Chemistry where small misunderstandings often repeat themselves.

1. Why Reviewing After the Exam Matters |

Many students close their exam paper as soon as they leave the hall, thinking that nothing can be changed. In reality, while you cannot change the marks you already earned, you can absolutely change the marks you will earn in the next paper.

Exam papers reveal your thinking patterns under pressure. They show exactly which concepts you misapplied, which command words you misread, and which calculation steps you skipped. This is valuable diagnostic data.

Set aside 30–45 minutes after each exam to write down what you remember about difficult questions. Do not wait for the official results. Your memory of the questions will fade within hours.

2. Common Mistakes in IGCSE Chemistry | IGCSE

Certain errors appear again and again in IGCSE Chemistry papers. Recognising them in your own work is the first step toward avoiding them next time.

  • Writing state symbols incorrectly or omitting them – especially (aq) for solutions.
  • Mixing up the definitions of a strong acid and a concentrated acid.
  • Confusing covalent bonds with intermolecular forces.
  • Forgetting to balance equations or using the correct charges on ions.
  • Misinterpreting ‘calculate’ versus ‘deduce’ – a calculation needs working, a deduction needs reasoning.

Misinterpreting ‘calculate’ versus ‘deduce’ – a calculation needs working, a deduction needs reasoning.

  • 混淆“calculate(计算)”和“deduce(推断)”——计算需要步骤,推断需要推理。

Write down every mistake you remember making, even if it seems tiny. Small marks add up to grade boundaries.

3. Balancing Equations and Formulae |

One of the most frequent sources of lost marks is a poorly balanced equation. In IGCSE Chemistry, you must be able to balance both full equations and ionic equations, and use state symbols correctly.

Always check the charge balance as well as the atom balance in ionic equations. For example, when aluminium reacts with oxygen:

4Al(s) + 3O₂(g) → 2Al₂O₃(s)

Notice that the formula of aluminium oxide is Al₂O₃ because Al³⁺ and O²⁻ combine in a 2:3 ratio to give a neutral compound.

When balancing, never change the subscript in a chemical formula. You may only change the number in front of the formula. Writing CO instead of CO₂ is a serious error.

4. Stoichiometry and Mole Calculations |

Mole calculations are a core part of IGCSE Chemistry and often appear in Paper 2 and Paper 4. Many students know the formula but lose marks because they forget to convert units or use the incorrect molar ratio.

Remember the central relationship:

moles = mass (g) ÷ molar mass (g/mol)

For gases, use the molar volume: 1 mole of any gas occupies 24 dm³ at room temperature and pressure (r.t.p.). For concentrations:

concentration (mol/dm³) = moles ÷ volume (dm³)

Always convert cm³ to dm³ by dividing by 1000 before using the formula. A very common trap is leaving the volume in cm³ when the concentration is in mol/dm³.

In titration calculations, clearly write down the balanced equation and state the mole ratio. For example, if H₂SO₄ neutralises NaOH, the ratio is 1:2.

5. Organic Chemistry Traps |

Organic chemistry in IGCSE is often tested through naming, drawing structural formulas, and describing reactions. One key trap is confusing homologous series trends with the properties of specific compounds.

For example, alkanes are generally unreactive, but they do combust and can undergo substitution with halogens in ultraviolet light. Alkenes are more reactive and undergo addition reactions, including decolourising bromine water.

Be careful with the naming rules. The suffix tells you the functional group: -ane for alkane, -ene for alkene, -ol for alcohol, -oic acid for carboxylic acid. In esters, the first part comes from the alcohol and the second from the acid.

When asked to draw the display formula of ethanol, show every bond and every atom. A skeletal formula may not be accepted in IGCSE unless the question explicitly asks for it.

6. Experimental Techniques and Errors |

Questions about practical work often test your ability to identify sources of error and suggest improvements. You do not need to know every detail of every experiment, but you must understand the principles.

A common question involves heating a hydrated salt to constant mass. The correct technique is to heat, cool, weigh, and repeat until two consecutive readings are the same. This ensures all water has been removed.

When measuring volumes of gases, one mistake is reading the gas syringe or measuring cylinder from the wrong position. Always read at eye level from the bottom of the meniscus.

In terms of reactivity, remember that a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its salt solution. Use the reactivity series correctly.

7. Understanding Command Words |

IGCSE Chemistry questions use specific command words. Knowing what each word asks for can save you from losing easy marks.

Command Word What You Must Do
State / Name Give a brief answer, no explanation needed.
Describe Write what happens, not why.
Explain Give a reason or mechanism for why something happens.
Calculate Show your working and give the answer with units.
Deduce Use given evidence to reach a conclusion.

Notice the difference between ‘describe’ and ‘explain’. For the reaction of magnesium with dilute hydrochloric acid, describing means saying ‘bubbles are produced and the magnesium dissolves’. Explaining means saying ‘magnesium is more reactive than hydrogen, so it displaces hydrogen from the acid, forming magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas’.

If a question says ‘suggest’, your answer can be based on common sense or your own knowledge, but it must be chemically reasonable.

8. Building a Personal Error Log |

An error log is not the same as a set of notes. It is a living document that records your mistakes and the reason behind each one. After the exam, list every question you found difficult, what went wrong, and the correct principle.

For example:

例如:

  • Question: Why is the ionic bond strong?
  • My answer: ‘Because positive and negative charges attract.’
  • Missing point: The attraction is between oppositely charged ions, but you must mention the electrostatic attraction acting in all directions and the large forces between ions.

Update your error log systematically in the week after the exam. Use a table with columns for ‘Question topic’, ‘My mistake’, ‘Correct answer’, and ‘Reason for error’.

Review this error log before your next chemistry test. It is far more effective than rereading a whole textbook.

9. Improving Exam Technique |

After the exam, think about your time management and question-reading habits. Did you spend too long on early multiple-choice questions? Did you misread a keyword such as ‘not’ or ‘all except’? These are technique issues, not knowledge gaps.

A useful strategy is to allocate one mark per minute. If a question is worth 4 marks, aim to finish it within 4 minutes. For calculation questions, always write down the equation you are using, even if the final answer is wrong.

Another technique is to read the last line of a question before reading the stem. This tells you exactly what to look for, especially in data interpretation questions.

Check whether the question uses the word ‘structure’ or ‘properties’. Confusing these leads to answers about physical properties when the question asks about bonding.

检查题目使用的是“structure(结构)”还是“properties(性质)”。

10. Using Past Papers Effectively |

Past papers are the closest thing to the real exam, but only if you use them correctly. After the exam, return to past papers to target your weak areas instead of doing them all randomly.

Create a mini-test of 3–4 questions that match the types you got wrong in the real exam. Time yourself, mark yourself honestly, and then explain your answers in writing.

Do not just mark an answer as wrong. Find the mark scheme wording and compare it with your own phrase. Examiners reward specific key terms such as ‘delocalised electrons’, ‘reducing agent’, and ‘endothermic’.

As you practice, note whether your mistake is a slip, a misunderstanding, or a knowledge gap. Slips can be fixed by slowing down; misunderstandings need a concept review; knowledge gaps need extra reading.

11. Staying Motivated for the Next Session |

One exam does not define your ability in chemistry. The IGCSE syllabus covers many topics, and one difficult paper does not mean the next one will be equally hard.

Set a small, achievable goal for your next revision session. For instance, ‘I will learn the test for anions by the end of this week’ is better than ‘I will study chemistry all Sunday’.

Talk positively about your mistakes. Say ‘I have found a gap to fix’ instead of ‘I am bad at chemistry’. Growth happens when you treat errors as information.

Reward yourself after completing a review session. A short break, a snack, or a walk can help your brain consolidate new learning.

12. Final Summary | 总结

The period after an exam is a golden opportunity for learning. By reviewing your paper, understanding your mistakes, and adjusting your techniques, you turn every wrong answer into a stepping stone toward a higher grade.

Remember the key actions: write down your immediate memory of the paper, analyse your errors in a structured log, revisit the specific concepts, and practice similar questions with time pressure.

Chemistry is a subject built on connections between ideas. Each review session strengthens those connections. Your next exam will not be just luck – it will be the result of the work you do after this one.

Keep your error log close, practise purposefully, and step into the next paper with confidence.
