In algebra, expressions often contain many terms. Simplifying an expression by collecting like terms is one of the most important skills you need for IGCSE Mathematics. It turns long and messy expressions into a clear and compact form, which makes solving equations, rearranging formulas and graphing functions much easier.

在代数中,表达式常常包含许多项。通过合并同类项来化简表达式是 IGCSE 数学中最重要的技能之一。它能把冗长繁杂的表达式变成清晰简洁的形式,从而让解方程、变形公式以及绘制函数图像都变得更加容易。


1. What Are Like Terms? | 什么是同类项?

A term in algebra is a single number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables. In the expression 3x + 5y – 2, there are three terms: 3x, 5y and -2.

代数中的项是一个单独的数、一个变量,或者数与变量的乘积。在表达式 3x + 5y – 2 中,共有三项:3x、5y 和 -2。

The number in front of a variable is called the coefficient. For the term 3x, the coefficient is 3. For the term 5y, the coefficient is 5. A term without a written coefficient, such as x, has a coefficient of 1.

变量前面的数字叫作系数。对于项 3x,系数是 3;对于项 5y,系数是 5。没有写出系数的项,如 x,其系数为 1。

Like terms are terms that have exactly the same variable part, including the same powers. For example, 3x and 7x are like terms, but 3x and 3y are not like terms because their variables are different.

同类项是指变量部分完全相同(包括相同幂次)的项。例如,3x 和 7x 是同类项,但 3x 和 3y 不是同类项,因为它们的变量不同。
