Balancing Chemical Equations |

📚 Balancing Chemical Equations |

Chemical equations are the language of chemistry. They show how reactants transform into products during a reaction. Understanding how to write and balance them is a core skill in IGCSE science.

1. The Law of Conservation of Mass |

In any chemical reaction, atoms are neither created nor destroyed. Therefore, the total mass of the reactants must equal the total mass of the products. This is the law of conservation of mass.

This law is the fundamental reason why chemical equations must be balanced. If the number of atoms of each element is not the same on both sides, mass would not be conserved, which is impossible in real reactions.

2. What is a Chemical Equation? |

A chemical equation uses symbols and formulae to represent a reaction. The reactants are written on the left side, and the products are written on the right side, separated by an arrow (→) that shows the direction of the reaction.

For example, when hydrogen burns in oxygen, water is formed:

H₂ + O₂ → H₂O

This equation is unbalanced because the left side has two oxygen atoms, while the right side has only one. We need to fix this by adding coefficients.

3. Balancing by Inspection |

Balancing involves placing whole-number coefficients in front of formulae so that the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides. A coefficient multiplies the entire formula that follows it.

Start by balancing elements that appear in only one reactant and one product. Leave elements that appear in multiple compounds until the end.

It is often helpful to balance metals first, then non-metals, and finally hydrogen and oxygen.

4. Step-by-Step Example |

Let us balance the equation for the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen to form water.

Step 1: Write the unbalanced equation.

H₂ + O₂ → H₂O

Step 2: Count the number of atoms of each element on both sides.

Element Reactants Products
H 2 2
O 2 1

Step 3: Balance the oxygen atoms by putting a coefficient 2 in front of H₂O.

H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

Step 4: Now count hydrogen atoms again. The right side has 4 hydrogen atoms, so we place a coefficient 2 in front of H₂ on the left.

2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

Step 5: Check all atoms. Both sides have 4 hydrogen and 2 oxygen atoms. The equation is balanced.

5. Common Symbols in Equations |

Chemical equations use several symbols to provide extra information.

  • + reads as ‘and’ and separates different reactants or products.

  • means ‘produces’ or ‘yields’, showing the direction from reactants to products.

  • indicates a reversible reaction, where the reaction can occur in both directions.

  • Δ written above the arrow means heat is supplied to the reaction.

6. State Symbols |

State symbols indicate the physical state of each substance in a reaction.

  • (s) means solid.

  • (l) means liquid.

  • (g) means gas.

  • (aq) means aqueous, i.e. dissolved in water.

For example, the reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid is written as:

Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl₂(aq) + H₂(g)

7. Ionic Equations |

In aqueous reactions, some ions do not take part in the reaction. These are called spectator ions. Removing them gives a net ionic equation.

For example, when silver nitrate reacts with sodium chloride, the full equation is:

AgNO₃(aq) + NaCl(aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO₃(aq)

In ionic form, we show all soluble salts as separated ions:

Ag⁺(aq) + NO₃⁻(aq) + Na⁺(aq) + Cl⁻(aq) → AgCl(s) + Na⁺(aq) + NO₃⁻(aq)

The sodium and nitrate ions appear on both sides, so they are spectator ions. Removing them gives:

Ag⁺(aq) + Cl⁻(aq) → AgCl(s)

This net ionic equation shows the actual chemical change taking place.

8. Practice Examples |

Let us balance a few more equations step by step.

Example 1: Methane burns in oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water.

CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O

Balance carbon first: already balanced. Next balance hydrogen: left has 4, right has 2, so put 2 in front of H₂O. Then balance oxygen: right now has 2 + 2 = 4 oxygen atoms, left needs 2 in front of O₂. The balanced equation is:

CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O

Example 2: Iron reacts with oxygen to form iron(III) oxide.

Fe + O₂ → Fe₂O₃

Balance iron by putting 4 in front of Fe. Balance oxygen by putting 3 in front of O₂. Results in:

4Fe + 3O₂ → 2Fe₂O₃

9. Common Mistakes |

Students often make the following mistakes when balancing equations.

  • Changing subscripts: You must never change the small numbers in a chemical formula to balance an equation. Only coefficients can be changed.

  • Adding coefficients to every compound: Only add a coefficient where it is needed. Do not add the same coefficient to all formulas.

  • Forgetting to multiply the coefficient through the entire formula: A coefficient before a formula multiplies every atom in that formula.

  • Using fractions instead of whole numbers: In IGCSE, you should balance equations using the smallest whole-number coefficients.

10. Summary | 总结

Balancing chemical equations is a vital skill that applies the law of conservation of mass. Start with elements that appear once, then adjust coefficients step by step, and always check your final atom counts.
