📚 Biological Drawings for Cambridge A-Level Biology | 剑桥A-Level生物绘图技能
In Cambridge A-Level Biology, a good biological drawing is not about artistic talent. It is a scientific record that shows what you actually observe under the microscope, with clear structures, accurate proportions and correct labels. Examiners award marks for sharp outlines, no shading, relevant labels and the correct use of a scale bar.
1. Why Biological Drawings Matter |
Biological drawings are part of Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level practical assessment, especially in Paper 3 and the Advanced Practical Skills paper. They test observation, selection of relevant tissue areas and the ability to communicate structure precisely.
A drawing made from a real slide helps you notice cell shape, arrangement, organelles and tissue organisation that a photograph may hide. It also reinforces the link between structure and function, which is a core skill in the Cambridge syllabus.
Many questions ask you to draw only what you see, not what you expect to see from a textbook diagram. This develops careful observation and prevents the common mistake of adding structures that are not visible.
2. Drawing Equipment and Media |
Use a sharp HB pencil, a clean eraser and unlined white paper. Pencil lines are required because they can be drawn faintly, corrected cleanly and remain precise under examination conditions.
A ruler must be used for label lines; never draw freehand label lines or arrows. Drawings should be large enough to show the required details, usually occupying at least half a page.
Do not use coloured pencils, pens or markers. Colour is not accepted in Cambridge biological drawings because it can mask the clarity of labelled structures and does not add scientific value.
3. Types of Biological Drawings |
Cambridge practical papers commonly ask for two kinds of drawings: low-power plan diagrams and high-power cell detail drawings. Each has a different purpose, different level of detail and different marking scheme.
| Feature | Low-power plan | High-power cell drawing |
| Shows | Tissue distribution only | Individual cell structures |
| Cells drawn | No individual cells | Yes, 2-3 adjacent cells |
| Typical labels | Epidermis, cortex, vascular bundle, pith | Cell wall, nucleus, chloroplast, vacuole |
| Magnification | Usually low, e.g. 40× or 100× | Usually high, e.g. 400× |
A plan diagram shows the distribution of tissues in an organ, such as a root, stem or leaf. It uses only outlines, no individual cells, and must include a scale bar if required by the question.
A high-power cell detail drawing shows a small number of clearly visible cells, with cell walls, nuclei, chloroplasts or other organelles drawn as seen. It should represent the correct proportion and shape of each cell.
4. Low-Power Plan Drawings |
For a low-power plan, identify the outline of the specimen and then map the main tissue regions. For a dicotyledonous stem or root, typical regions include epidermis, cortex, vascular bundles or stele, pith and xylem/phloem.
Do not draw individual cells in a plan. Use single clear lines to separate tissues, and keep the proportions of tissue widths and positions accurate. An outline should be continuous and unshaded.
If a vascular bundle is selected, you may be asked to draw a plan of one bundle. Show the relative positions of xylem and phloem, cambium if visible, and surrounding ground tissue only as outlines. For example, in a dicot stem, the xylem is usually closer to the centre and the phloem closer to the outside.
When drawing a leaf transverse section, the main areas are upper epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, vascular bundle and lower epidermis with stomata. Do not label individual palisade cells in a plan; label the whole layer.
5. High-Power Cell Detail Drawings |
When drawing cells at high power, select two or three adjacent cells that are sharply focused. Draw only what you can see, not textbook features that are not visible.
Plant cell drawings often include the cell wall as a double line, the cytoplasm, a central vacuole and a nucleus. Chloroplasts should be drawn only if visible, and their shape, size and distribution must match the specimen.
Draw the cell wall as two parallel lines only when it is thick enough to be seen at high power, as in Elodea or onion epidermis. The middle lamella between adjacent cells may appear as a thin dark line.
Animal cell drawings should show the cell membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus; organelles such as mitochondria are only drawn if clearly resolved under the objective used. If you are using a temporary slide of human cheek cells, do not add chloroplasts or a cell wall.
6. Essential Rules for Accurate Drawings |
Follow these rules for every drawing: use clear, continuous lines; do not shade or colour; do not use a pen; leave enough space for labels on the right or left; and give the drawing a title.
Drawings must be in correct proportion. If one cell is three times as long as it is wide in the slide, the drawing should keep that ratio. A distorted drawing may lose marks even if all labels are correct.
Label lines must touch the structure and must not cross each other. They should be drawn with a ruler and end in a neat horizontal line for the label. Use the same side of the drawing for all labels if possible.
Write a title below or above the drawing. The title should state what the specimen is, the section or view, and the magnification if known, for example ‘Transverse section of a dicotyledonous root under high power’.
标题应说明标本是什么、切片或观察面以及放大倍数,例如 ‘Transverse section of a dicotyledonous root under high power’。
7. Labelling and Annotation |
Labels name the structures you have drawn. Use the terms taught in the syllabus, such as ‘xylem vessel’, ‘spongy mesophyll cell’, ‘guard cell’ or ‘endodermis’. The spelling must be accurate because scientific terms are often checked.
An annotation is a short note that explains a feature or function, for example ‘thick lignified wall for support and water transport’. In some questions, annotations can gain extra marks, especially when they link structure to function.
注释是解释某一特征或功能的简短说明,例如 ‘thick lignified wall for support and water transport’。在
