📚 Contents of Published Accounts |

Published accounts are the formal financial statements and accompanying reports that a limited company must prepare, publish and file after the end of each financial year. They give external users, such as shareholders, lenders, suppliers and regulators, a true and fair view of the company’s financial performance, financial position and cash flows.

For Cambridge International A Level Accounting, students must be able to identify the main components of a published annual report and explain the purpose and content of each financial statement and narrative report. This article covers the complete set of published financial statements required under IAS 1 Presentation of Financial Statements, together with the directors’ report and auditor’s report.

1. The Statutory Framework and Complete Set |

Published accounts are prepared under company law and applicable financial reporting standards. For a limited company, the annual report normally includes a chairman’s statement, directors’ report, auditor’s report, financial statements and notes. The financial statements are the core quantitative information, while the narrative reports provide context and governance information.

Under IAS 1, a complete set of financial statements includes a statement of financial position, a statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, a statement of changes in equity, a statement of cash flows, and notes comprising significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. Comparative figures for the previous year must also be disclosed.

The purpose of these requirements is to improve comparability, reliability and transparency. External users cannot demand internal documents, so published accounts must be sufficiently detailed to support investment, lending and regulatory decisions.

Statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income | 损益及其他综合收益表 Report financial performance | 报告财务业绩

Statement of changes in equity | 权益变动表 Explain movements in equity | 解释权益变动
Statement of cash flows | 现金流量表 Explain cash movements | 解释现金流动
Notes to the financial statements | 财务报表附注 Disclose policies and details | 披露政策与明细
Directors’ and auditor’s reports | 董事会报告与审计报告 Provide governance and assurance | 提供治理与鉴证

2. Statement of Profit or Loss and Other Comprehensive Income |

The statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income measures financial performance over the accounting period. It starts with revenue, deducts cost of sales to show gross profit, and then subtracts distribution costs, administrative expenses and finance costs to arrive at profit before tax.

After deducting income tax expense, the statement shows profit for the year. Other comprehensive income includes items that are recognised directly in equity rather than in profit or loss, such as gains or losses on revaluation of non-current assets.

Gross Profit = Revenue − Cost of Sales

Profit for the Year = Gross Profit − Distribution Costs − Administrative Expenses − Finance Costs − Tax Expense

The statement helps users assess whether the company is generating profit from its main trading activities, how efficiently it controls expenses, and how much profit is available for dividends or reinvestment. A Level questions often require students to prepare this statement from a trial balance and adjustments.

3. Statement of Financial Position |

The statement of financial position reports the assets, liabilities and equity of the company at the reporting date. It is based on the accounting equation: Assets = Equity + Liabilities.

Assets are classified as non-current assets and current assets. Non-current assets are held for more than one year and include land and buildings, plant and machinery, motor vehicles and intangible assets. Current assets are expected to be realised within one year and include inventory, trade receivables, other receivables, bank and cash.

Liabilities are classified as non-current liabilities and current liabilities. Non-current liabilities include long-term loans and debentures; current liabilities include trade payables, short-term borrowings, tax payable and accrued expenses.

Equity is the residual interest after deducting all liabilities. For a limited company, equity typically includes ordinary share capital, share premium, revaluation reserve, general reserve and retained earnings. A Level students must be able to classify items correctly and understand the effect of adjustments on the statement.
