Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport |

📚 Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport |

Cells are constantly exchanging substances with their surroundings. Three key processes make this possible: diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Understanding their differences is essential for IGCSE Science.

1. Diffusion | 扩散

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient, until equilibrium is reached. This is a passive process, so it does not require energy.

  • Small molecules such as oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse easily through cell membranes.
  • In the lungs, oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood because oxygen concentration is higher in the alveoli.
  • Carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction to be breathed out.

2. Factors Affecting Diffusion |

Several factors affect the rate of diffusion: concentration gradient, temperature, surface area and diffusion distance. A steeper concentration gradient, higher temperature, larger surface area and shorter distance all increase the rate of diffusion.

Rate of diffusion ∝ (concentration gradient × surface area × temperature) / distance

  • Higher temperature gives particles more kinetic energy, so they move faster and collide more often.
  • Smaller organisms have a large surface area to volume ratio, which makes diffusion more efficient.

3. Osmosis |

Osmosis is a special type of diffusion involving water molecules. It is the net movement of water from a region of higher water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentrated solution), through a partially permeable membrane.

  • The partially permeable membrane allows water molecules to pass through but not larger solute molecules.
  • In animal cells, if placed in pure water, water enters the cell and the cell may burst because it has no cell wall.
  • In plant cells, the cell wall prevents bursting; instead the cell becomes turgid.

4. Water Potential | 水势

Water potential is a measure of the tendency of water to move from one place to another. Pure water has the highest water potential, usually taken as zero. Adding solutes lowers water potential, making it more negative.

  • A dilute solution has a higher (less negative) water potential than a concentrated solution.
  • Water moves by osmosis from higher water potential to lower water potential.

Pure water = 0 kPa; adding solute → negative values

5. Active Transport |

Active transport is the movement of particles from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, against the concentration gradient. This process requires energy carried by ATP molecules and uses carrier proteins in the cell membrane.

  • Energy is released by respiration and used to change the shape of carrier proteins.
  • In plant roots, mineral ions are absorbed from the soil even when soil concentration is lower than inside the root.
  • In the small intestine, glucose is absorbed into the blood against its concentration gradient after digestion.

6. Comparing the Three Processes |

Diffusion and osmosis are passive processes, while active transport requires energy. Diffusion moves any small particles, osmosis moves only water, and active transport moves substances against the gradient.

Process Energy Direction Membrane needed?
Diffusion None High → low No
Osmosis None High water potential → low water potential Yes (partially permeable)
Active transport ATP Low → high Yes (carrier proteins)

7. Practical Applications |

Osmosis is used to preserve food. High concentrations of sugar or salt draw water out of microorganisms, preventing them from growing. Active transport is used by kidney cells to reabsorb glucose from the filtrate.

  • Salting fish and making jams rely on osmosis to remove water.
  • Plants use active transport to take up nitrate ions from the soil.

8. Experimental Design |

To investigate osmosis, you can place potato cylinders in different concentrations of sugar or salt solution and measure their change in mass. If the solution is more concentrated, water leaves the potato and mass decreases.

  • Equal-sized potato cylinders are used to keep surface area and volume the same.
  • Pat dry the potato before weighing to remove surface water.
  • Repeat the experiment several times and calculate a mean.

9. Common Exam Pitfalls |

Many students confuse ‘high concentration of water’ with ‘high water concentration’. In osmosis, always refer to water potential, not solute concentration, to avoid mistakes.

  • Do not say ‘water diffuses’ — say ‘water molecules move by osmosis’.
  • Active transport always requires energy, so if the question mentions respiration, link the two.
  • In animals, osmosis can cause cells to shrink (crenation) or swell and burst (lysis).

10. Summary | 总结
