Firms and Industries |

📚 Firms and Industries |

Firms are the basic production units in an economy; an industry is a group of firms producing similar products or services. Understanding how firms are classified, grow, and interact within industries is central to Cambridge A-Level Economics, especially for analysing costs, market power, and efficiency.

1. Defining Firms and Industries |

A firm is an economic unit that employs factors of production (land, labour, capital, enterprise) to produce goods or services. Firms range from sole traders to multinational corporations, but all aim to combine inputs efficiently to generate output.

An industry is a collection of firms producing products that are close substitutes, such as the airline industry or the smartphone industry. The definition of an industry affects how economists measure competition, concentration, and market power.

2. Classifying Production: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary |

Economists classify production into primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. Primary industries extract raw materials directly from nature. Secondary industries transform raw materials into finished or semi-finished goods. Tertiary industries provide services rather than physical goods.

  • Primary: agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry, oil extraction |
  • Secondary: car manufacturing, food processing, construction, electricity generation |
  • Tertiary: retail, banking, education, transport, tourism |

Some textbooks add a quaternary sector for knowledge-based services such as IT and research, but the three-sector model remains the core classification in Cambridge A-Level Economics.

3. Private Sector and Public Sector |

In a mixed economy, firms operate in either the private sector or the public sector. Private sector firms are owned by individuals, families, or shareholders and usually pursue profit maximisation. Public sector organisations are owned and controlled by the government and often provide goods or services with positive externalities or public good characteristics.

Governments may transfer firms between sectors. Privatisation sells
