1. Background and Causes | 背景与原因

The revolution of 1848–9 in the German states was not a single uprising but a series of liberal, nationalist and social protests. Its roots lay in the repressive political system established after 1815 and in the rising expectations of an educated middle class.

The German Confederation, created by the Congress of Vienna, included 39 states. Austria and Prussia were the two dominant powers. Metternich’s system of censorship and political police blocked constitutional reform.

In addition, economic distress played a major role. The agrarian crisis of 1846–47 and the financial panic of 1847 created unemployment, hunger and anger among artisans, workers and peasants.

2. The March Revolutions in the German States | 德意志各邦的三月革命

News of the revolution in Paris in February 1848 triggered the so-called March demands. These were liberal petitions demanding freedom of the press, jury courts, civic armaments and a national German parliament.
