For students taking AQA A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics, the period between now and 21 April is not simply a countdown to the exams. It is a window of opportunity. A lot can change in this time – grades can move upward, weak topics can be stabilised and exam technique can be sharpened. In administrative terms, tier changes for GCSE science entries may be made for free until 21 April. For A-Level students, the lesson is the same: the “tier” you are aiming for – your target grade band – can still be changed at no cost other than effort.

A low oxygen concentration means less ATP is produced. Therefore fewer nitrate ions are transported into the root. Allocate the first 5 days to the weakest high-impact topic from your baseline test. Allocate the middle 15 days to three further priorities, at 5 days each. Allocate the final 10 days to full past papers and targeted corrections. Write this plan as a physical grid, with each day containing one “must-do” revision block of 90 minutes.

That separation of “learning time” and “rehearsal time” is a proven differentiator between students who remain at the same grade and those who jump one tier.

You should also analyse the command words. In AQA A-Level science, “Suggest” questions, worth 2-3 marks, often reward a reasonable hypothesis even if it falls outside the specification. Do not leave these blank – write one plausible mechanism, even with a low confidence. For example, a “Suggest how this mutation could alter enzyme activity” question can be answered by “the mutation changes the amino acid sequence, altering the enzyme’s tertiary structure and substrate binding site”. This earns full marks regardless of the exact mutation described.

Do not check social media during the 10-minute break, as it disrupts the consolidation of memory.
