1. Benzene Structure and Aromatic Stability | 苯的结构与芳香稳定性
Benzene, C₆H₆, is a planar cyclic molecule with six carbon atoms arranged in a regular hexagon. The six π electrons are delocalised in a ring above and below the plane, giving bond lengths that are intermediate between C–C and C=C. This delocalisation makes benzene much more stable than the hypothetical cyclohexatriene structure. The enthalpy change of hydrogenation is less exothermic than expected by about 152 kJ mol⁻¹, and this stabilisation energy is called the resonance energy of benzene.

Because the π electron cloud is spread over all six carbon atoms, benzene does not readily undergo addition reactions. Addition would disrupt the stable delocalised ring. Instead, benzene undergoes electrophilic substitution, where an electrophile replaces a hydrogen atom and the aromatic ring is preserved.

2. Electrophilic Substitution of Benzene | 苯的亲电取代反应
The most important reactions of benzene are nitration, halogenation, alkylation and acylation. All proceed by the same general mechanism: generation of a strong electrophile, attack by the π cloud to form a carbocation intermediate, and loss of H⁺ to restore the aromatic system. The intermediate is often called a Wheland intermediate or arenium ion.
