📚 Organisation Structure (A Level) | 组织结构 (A Level)
Organisation structure refers to the formal system of task and reporting relationships that coordinates and motivates employees so that they work together to achieve organisational goals. In A Level Business, understanding how structures are designed helps students analyse how decisions are made, how authority is delegated, and how communication flows within a business.
1. What is Organisation Structure? |
Organisation structure is the formal framework by which job tasks are divided, grouped and coordinated. It defines reporting relationships, authority levels and the way information flows within a business.
The structure is usually displayed in an organisation chart, which shows roles, responsibilities and lines of authority. A suitable structure supports efficiency, clear accountability and effective communication, while an unsuitable one can create confusion and delay.
2. Key Concepts: Span of Control and Chain of Command |
Span of control is the number of employees who report directly to one manager. A narrow span allows closer supervision but increases layers and costs; a wide span reduces layers but may reduce supervision quality.
Chain of command is the unbroken line of authority from the top to the bottom of the organisation. It clarifies who can give orders and who must follow them. If the chain is too long, decisions may be delayed and messages distorted, reducing operational effectiveness.
3. Hierarchy and Levels of Management |
Hierarchy refers to the number of levels of management in an organisation, such as senior management, middle management and supervisors. Each level carries different levels of authority and responsibility.
More hierarchical levels create more promotion opportunities but can lead to slower communication and higher administrative costs. A business must choose the number of levels that balances control, cost and responsiveness.
4. Tall vs Flat Structures |
Tall structures have many layers and narrow spans of control, which allow close supervision and clear promotion routes but increase costs and slow down decision-making.
Flat structures have fewer layers and wider spans of control, encouraging faster communication and greater employee involvement but requiring more skilled and self-motivated employees. The table below summarises the main differences.
|---|---|---|
| Levels of hierarchy | 层级数量 | Many | 多 | Few | 少 |
