Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose. Oxygen is released as a by-product. The energy from light is trapped by the green pigment chlorophyll and converted into chemical energy stored in glucose.

The word equation is the first thing examiners expect you to recall:

Notice that the arrow is not reversible under normal plant conditions. Photosynthesis is an endothermic process because it requires energy input from light. The glucose produced may be used immediately in respiration, converted for storage, or transported to other parts of the plant.
