Prime Factorization and Number Theory: Unlocking 168 |

📚 Prime Factorization and Number Theory: Unlocking 168 |

In this article, we will explore the fundamental concept of prime factorization, using the number 168 as our central example. Through this focus, we will practise breaking down a composite number into its prime building blocks, express it in index form, list all its factors, and apply this knowledge to find HCFs and LCMs. This is a core skill for the IGCSE Edexcel Mathematics syllabus.

1. What is Prime Factorization? |

Prime factorization is the process of writing a whole number as a product of its prime factors. A prime number is a positive integer greater than 1 that has exactly two distinct positive divisors: 1 and itself. The first few primes are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, and so on. Every whole number greater than 1 can be written uniquely as a product of primes, apart from the order of the factors. This is the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic.

To factorise 168, we can use a factor tree or repeated division by the smallest prime that divides the current number. Let us start by dividing by 2, since 168 is even.

168 ÷ 2 = 84, so 168 = 2 × 84. Next, 84 ÷ 2 = 42, so 84 = 2 × 42. Then 42 ÷ 2 = 21, so 42 = 2 × 21. Finally, 21 = 3 × 7, and both 3 and 7 are primes. Therefore, the complete prime factorization is:
