The Meaning of Voltage |

📚 The Meaning of Voltage |

Voltage is one of the most important ideas in electricity, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. In CIE A-level Physics, voltage is defined in terms of energy and charge, and it appears in almost every circuit question you will meet.

1. What is Voltage? |

Voltage is defined as the work done per unit charge when a charge moves between two points in an electric field. In circuit analysis, this is usually called the potential difference between the two points.

The defining equation is:

V = W / Q

Here, V is the potential difference in volts, W is the energy transferred in joules, and Q is the charge in coulombs.

One volt is therefore equal to one joule per coulomb. This means that if 1 joule of energy is transferred when 1 coulomb of charge moves through a component, the voltage across that component is 1 volt.

A useful analogy is water pressure: voltage is like the pressure difference that pushes water through a pipe. It is not the water itself, but the driving influence that makes the water move.

2. Electric Potential and Potential Difference |

Electric potential at a point is the potential energy per unit charge at that point relative to a chosen reference point. In many problems, the reference is taken as the negative terminal of a battery or the ground of a circuit.

Voltage, or potential difference, is then the difference in electric potential between two points. It tells us how much energy per unit charge would be transferred if a charge moved from one point to the other.

Because electric potential is defined per unit charge, voltage is a scalar quantity. It has magnitude but no direction, although its sign depends on which point is taken as the higher potential.

An analogy with height is helpful: the potential difference is like the difference in height between two points on a slope. The actual height above sea level matters less than the height difference, because it is the difference that drives a falling object.

3. The Volt in SI Base Units |

Since voltage is energy per unit charge, we can express the volt in terms of SI base units. The base units of energy are kg m² s⁻², and the base units of charge are A s.

Therefore:

因此:

1 V = 1 J C⁻¹ = 1 kg m² s⁻³ A⁻¹

This expression is useful in dimensional analysis. CIE exam questions sometimes ask you to show that a formula involving voltage is homogeneous in terms of units.

For example, power is given by P = IV. The units of current and voltage multiply to give A × V = A × kg m² s⁻³ A⁻¹ = kg m² s⁻³ = W, which is correct.

A × V = A × kg m² s⁻³ A⁻¹ = kg m² s⁻³ = W,这是正确的。

4. Voltage as Energy Transfer |

When a charge Q moves through a potential difference V, the electrical energy transferred is calculated using:

E = Q V

This energy may be converted into different forms. In a resistor, electrical energy is transferred to internal energy and the resistor becomes hot. In a lamp, energy is transferred by heating and light. In a motor, the transfer includes mechanical work.

This relationship also explains why high-voltage transmission is used over long distances. For a fixed power P = IV, increasing the voltage lowers the current for the same power. Since resistive heating in the cables is proportional to I²R, a lower current greatly reduces energy losses.

In atomic and particle physics, a related unit is the electronvolt. One electronvolt is the energy gained by an electron when it is accelerated through a potential difference of 1 volt.

5. Measuring Voltage |

A voltmeter is the instrument used to measure potential difference across a component. It must always be connected in parallel with the component being tested.

An ideal voltmeter has infinite resistance. This means no current passes through the voltmeter itself, so it does not change the circuit conditions it is measuring.

Real voltmeters have very high but finite resistance. In circuits with very large resistances, even a small current through the voltmeter can reduce the recorded reading, producing a systematic uncertainty.

Digital voltmeters are preferred in experiments because they have much higher input resistance than moving-coil meters and are easier to read.
