📚 The Nature of Operations |
Operations management is the business function responsible for transforming inputs such as materials, labour, and capital into outputs such as goods and services. In Cambridge International A Level Business, the nature of operations focuses on how resources are organised, how value is added, and how operational decisions support overall business strategy.
1. What Is Operations Management? |
Operations management is the process of planning, coordinating, and controlling the resources needed to produce goods and services. Every business has an operations function, whether it manufactures products, delivers services, or combines both.
The core model is the input-transformation-output system. Inputs include land, labour, capital, and enterprise; the transformation process adds value; outputs are goods, services, or a mixture of both.
Operations management is not only about production in factories. It also applies to service businesses such as banks, hospitals, and online retailers, where the transformation may involve information, customers, or experiences.
2. The Transformation Process |
The transformation process changes the form, location, timing, or ownership of resources so that they become more useful to customers. For example, a bakery transforms flour, water, yeast, and labour into bread, while an airline transforms passengers and fuel into transport services.
Inputs can be classified into transformed resources and transforming resources. Transformed resources are the materials, information, or customers that are changed; transforming resources are the staff and equipment that carry out the change.
Outputs can be tangible goods, intangible services, or a combination. Many modern businesses offer a product-service bundle, such as a smartphone with software updates and customer support.
3. Adding Value | 增值
Added value is the difference between the selling price of a product and the cost of bought-in materials and components. It measures how much extra worth the transformation process creates.
Added value = Selling price − Cost of bought-in materials and components
For example, if a furniture maker buys timber for $80 and sells a finished table for $220, the added value is $140, which must cover labour, rent, utilities, profit, and other costs.
Businesses can increase added value by improving product design, branding, quality, convenience, customisation, or after-sales service. Higher added value allows a firm to charge premium prices or achieve higher profit margins.
4. Productivity | 生产率
Productivity measures how efficiently inputs are converted into outputs. Labour productivity is one of the most common indicators in operations management.
Labour productivity = Total output per period ÷ Number of employees
For example, if a factory produces 10,000 units in one week with 50 employees, labour productivity is 200 units per worker. If output rises to 12,000 units with the same staff, productivity increases to 240 units per worker.
Productivity can be improved through training, better technology, improved motivation, efficient layout, and reliable suppliers. Higher productivity usually lowers unit costs and increases competitiveness.
5. Efficiency and Effectiveness |
Efficiency means producing output with the minimum possible inputs, avoiding waste of time, materials, and money. Effectiveness means achieving the intended objectives, such as meeting customer needs or quality targets.
A business can be efficient but not effective: it may produce large quantities at very low cost, but if customers do not want the product, the output is wasted. Similarly, a business can be effective but inefficient: it satisfies customers but uses too many resources.
Operations managers should aim to improve both. For example, a restaurant may reduce food waste (efficiency) while also ensuring meals are fresh and meet customer expectations (effectiveness).
6. Goods and Services in Operations |
Goods are tangible products that can be stored, touched, and owned. Services are intangible activities that are consumed at the point of delivery. Many businesses produce a mixture of goods and services, so operations must manage both dimensions.
| Feature | Goods | Services |
|---|---|---|
| Tangibility | Tangible | Intangible |
| Storage | Can be stored | Usually not storable |
| Customer contact | Low contact | High contact |
| Production and consumption | Separate in time | Often simultaneous |
| Quality measurement | Objective, measurable | Subjective, hard to measure |
These differences affect operations decisions. For example, a hotel cannot store an empty room for later sale, so it must manage demand and capacity carefully. A car manufacturer can store finished cars but must manage inventory costs.
7. Capital-Intensive and Labour-Intensive Operations |
Capital-intensive operations rely mainly on machinery, equipment, and automation, with relatively few workers. Labour-intensive operations rely mainly on human effort, with relatively little machinery.
Capital-intensive production can offer high output, consistent quality, and lower unit costs at large scale. However, it requires large initial investment, can be inflexible, and may lead to breakdowns or high maintenance costs.
Labour-intensive production can be more flexible, requires lower initial capital,
