The Origins of Centripetal Forces |

📚 The Origins of Centripetal Forces |

In circular motion, an object constantly changes direction, so its velocity vector changes even if its speed is constant. This change requires an acceleration directed towards the centre of the circle. The net force that produces this centre-seeking acceleration is called the centripetal force. However, centripetal force is not a mysterious extra push; it is always supplied by identifiable real forces such as tension, friction, gravity, or contact forces. This article explains where centripetal forces come from and how to analyse them in CIE A-Level Physics.

1. What a Centripetal Force Really Is | 向心力究竟是什么

A centripetal force is the resultant force acting on an object moving in a circle, directed towards the centre of that circle. It is not an additional force that appears when motion becomes circular. Instead, it is the name we give to whatever real force or combination of forces points inward. Its magnitude is given by F = mv²/r, where m is mass, v is speed, and r is the radius.
