When two or more waves meet at a point, they do not collide like particles; instead, their displacements add algebraically to produce a resultant wave. This idea is the principle of superposition, and it is the foundation for understanding interference, diffraction, and standing waves in the CIE A Level Physics syllabus.

1. What is the Principle of Superposition? | 什么是叠加原理?
The principle of superposition states that when two or more waves of the same type meet at a point, the resultant displacement at that point is the algebraic sum of the individual displacements at that instant. Each wave continues to travel through the overlap region as if the other waves were not present.
叠加原理指出:当两列或更多列同类波在空间某一点相遇时,该点在该时刻的合位移等于各列波单独存在时在该点产生的位移的代数和。每列波在重叠区域内继续传播,就好像其他波不存在一样。
For linear waves, the total displacement is given by:

2. Resultant Displacement and Algebraic Addition | 合位移与代数相加
Displacement is a signed quantity, so superposition involves adding positive and negative amplitudes carefully. If a positive pulse meets a negative pulse, the displacements partially or completely cancel while the pulses overlap.

Constructive interference occurs when two waves meet in phase. In phase means the waves have a phase difference of 0, 2π, 4π, or any integer multiple of 2π. The crests align with crests and troughs align with troughs.
