Understanding Fractions: Halves, Thirds, and Quarters |

📚 Understanding Fractions: Halves, Thirds, and Quarters |

Welcome to Grade 2, Lesson 16-6! In this lesson, we will discover what a fraction is, how to name equal parts of a whole, and how to find fractions of shapes and groups. We will focus on three special fractions: 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4. These simple ideas form the building blocks of many topics in IGCSE Mathematics, from ratios to percentages.

1. What Is a Fraction? |

A fraction is a way to describe part of a whole. When we cut a cake into equal pieces and eat one piece, the piece we eat is a fraction of the whole cake. Fractions help us talk about parts of a shape, parts of a group, or parts of a number.

Every fraction has two numbers. The number on the top is called the numerator. It tells us how many parts we are talking about. The number on the bottom is called the denominator. It tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into in total.

  • In the fraction 1/2, the numerator is 1 and the denominator is 2.

2. Equal Parts | 等分

Before we can write a fraction, the parts of the whole must be equal. This means every part must have the same size and the same shape. When we share fairly, we cut the whole into equal parts.

Look at a rectangle. If we draw one line down the middle, we get two equal parts. But if we draw a line that is not in the middle, the two parts are not equal, so we cannot call them halves.

Equal parts ⇌ same size and same shape

3. One Half (1/2) |

When a whole is divided into 2 equal parts, each part is called one half. We write one half as 1/2 or ½. The denominator 2 tells us there are 2 equal parts, and the numerator 1 tells us we are looking at 1 of those parts.

Imagine a round pizza cut into two equal slices. Each slice is one half of the pizza. If you take one slice, you have one half of the whole pizza.

1 ÷ 2 = 1/2 = ½

1 ÷ 2 = 1/2 = ½

  • One half of 10 apples is 5 apples, because 10 ÷ 2 = 5.

4. One Third (1/3) |

When a whole is divided into 3 equal parts, each part is called one third. We write one third as 1/3. The denominator 3 means three equal parts in total, and the numerator 1 means we take just one part.

Suppose we have a chocolate bar and we want to share it equally among three friends. We break it into 3 equal pieces. Each friend receives one third of the bar, which is written as 1/3.

1 ÷ 3 = 1/3

1 ÷ 3 = 1/3

5. One Quarter (1/4) |

When a whole is divided into 4 equal parts, each part is called one quarter or one fourth. We write one quarter as 1/4. Sometimes the word “quarter” is used for 1/4 in everyday life, such as a quarter of an hour or a quarter of a dollar.

If a square is divided into 4 equal smaller squares, each smaller square is one quarter of the large square. If we shade 2 of the 4 parts, we have two quarters, which is written as 2/4. Notice that 2/4 is the same as 1/2, because two quarters make one half.

1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 and 2 ÷ 4 = 2/4 = 1/2

6. Comparing Fractions |

When the whole is the same size, a fraction with a larger denominator means more equal parts, so each part is smaller. For example, 1/4 is smaller than 1/2, because cutting the same whole into 4 parts gives smaller pieces than cutting it into 2 parts.

We can put our three fractions in order from smallest to largest: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2. The fraction 1/3 is larger than 1/4 but smaller than 1/2.
