📚 Understanding Sexual and Asexual Reproduction |
Reproduction is one of the most fundamental characteristics of living organisms. Every living thing, from the smallest bacterium to the largest whale, must be able to produce new individuals of its own kind to ensure the survival of its species. In the Edexcel IGCSE Biology course, understanding the differences between sexual and asexual reproduction is a core requirement, and exam questions on this topic appear frequently across both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
By the end of this article, you will be able to define both types of reproduction, compare them in a table, give named examples, and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each — exactly what the mark scheme expects.
1. What Is Reproduction? |
Reproduction is the biological process by which new individual organisms (offspring) are produced from their parents. It is one of the seven characteristics of living organisms, often remembered by the mnemonic MRS GREN: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition.
There are two fundamentally different strategies of reproduction: sexual reproduction, which involves the fusion of gametes, and asexual reproduction, which involves only mitotic cell division from a single parent. The key question you must always ask is: “Does this process involve fertilisation?” If the answer is yes, it is sexual reproduction; if no, it is asexual reproduction.
2. Sexual Reproduction Explained |
Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of two gametes — a male gamete (such as sperm in animals or pollen in flowering plants) and a female gamete (such as an egg cell, also called an ovum). This fusion process is called fertilisation, and the cell produced as a result of fertilisation is called a zygote. The zygote then divides repeatedly by mitosis to form an embryo, which continues to grow and develop.
Because the offspring receives half of its genetic information (chromosomes) from each parent, the resulting individual possesses a unique combination of genes. This means that offspring are genetically different from both parents and from each other (except in the case of identical twins, which arise from a single zygote splitting).
Male gamete + Female gamete → Fertilisation → Zygote → Embryo
In humans, each gamete contains 23 chromosomes. When the sperm fuses with the egg, the zygote formed has 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) — one complete set from the mother and one from the father. This halving of chromosome number in gametes is achieved by a special type of cell division called meiosis, which occurs only in the reproductive organs.
3. Asexual Reproduction Explained |
Asexual reproduction involves only one parent. There is no fusion of gametes, no fertilisation, and no meiosis. The offspring are produced entirely by mitosis, a type of cell division that produces genetically identical cells. As a result, all offspring produced by asexual reproduction are genetically identical to the parent and to each other — they are called clones.
Since there is only one parent and no mixing of genetic material, asexual reproduction is generally much faster and requires less energy than sexual reproduction. However, it also means that there is no genetic variation in the population (apart from rare mutations). If the environment changes in a way that is harmful to the parent, it will be equally harmful to every single offspring.
One parent → Mitosis only → Genetically identical offspring (clones)
4. Key Differences — Comparison Table |
The table below summarises all the essential differences you need to memorise for the Edexcel IGCSE exam. You should be able to reproduce a version of this table from memory.
| Feature | Sexual Reproduction | Asexual Reproduction |
