📚 Understanding Unlimited Wants: The Foundation of Scarcity in A-Level Economics | 理解无限欲望:A-Level经济学中稀缺性的基础

In economics, the idea that human wants are unlimited is not merely a comment on human greed; it is the starting point for every resource allocation decision. This article explains unlimited wants as required by Cambridge A-Level Economics, linking the concept to scarcity, choice, opportunity cost, demand, utility and economic systems.

1. Defining Wants and Needs |

Economists often distinguish between needs and wants, although the boundary between them is not always fixed.

  • Needs are goods and services essential for survival, such as basic food, clean water, shelter, basic clothing and essential healthcare.
  • Wants are goods and services that raise living standards but are not strictly required for survival, such as restaurant meals, branded clothing, foreign travel and the latest smartphone.

For most microeconomic analysis, the word want is used in a broad sense. It means any preference that consumers reveal through their willingness to pay, whether the good is a necessity or a luxury.

2. The Assumption of Unlimited Wants |

Cambridge A-Level Economics builds the economic problem on the assumption that human wants are unlimited or insatiable.

This does not mean that every individual always wants more of every single good. It means that across a society, and over time, the total list of desired goods and services continues to expand. Once one want is satisfied, new wants emerge.

For example, after an individual buys a basic car, they may want a safer car, a more fuel-efficient car, or a second car. After buying a smartphone, they may want a newer model, a tablet and wireless earphones. Wants are never fully satisfied.

3. Scarcity: The Economic Problem |

Unlimited wants only create an economic problem because the resources available to satisfy them are limited. This combination gives rise to scarcity.

Scarcity exists when there are insufficient resources to satisfy all wants at a given moment. It is a relative concept, not an absolute shortage. Even rich societies face scarcity because wants continue to grow.

Unlimited Wants + Limited Resources = Scarcity

Because scarcity is permanent, economic agents cannot have everything they want. They must choose among alternatives, and every choice involves an opportunity cost.

4. Why Wants Are Unlimited: Psychological and Social Drivers |

Human wants multiply for several reasons. Understanding these drivers helps explain why scarcity cannot be eliminated simply by producing more goods.

  • Advertising and marketing create awareness of new products and reshape consumer preferences.
  • Social comparison and the demonstration effect encourage people to want goods similar to those owned by others.
  • Technological innovation continuously introduces goods and services that did not exist in earlier periods.
  • Rising real income allows former luxuries to become ordinary wants, while new luxury wants appear.

For A-Level evaluation, it is useful to note that some wants are socially created rather than biologically fixed. This means unlimited wants are partly a feature of economic and social systems, not just human nature.

5. Individual Wants versus Collective Wants |

Economists also separate individual wants, which are chosen privately, from collective wants, which are demanded by society as a whole.

Individual wants include food, clothing, entertainment and personal transport. Collective wants include national defence, law and order, street lighting, public health and environmental protection.

Because markets often under-provide collective wants, governments intervene through taxation and public spending. Public goods and merit goods are important examples where unlimited collective wants meet limited public resources.

6. Wants, Income and the Demand Curve |

A want becomes effective demand only when a consumer is both willing and able to pay for a good or service.
