📚 What is Marketing? |

Marketing is often misunderstood as simply advertising or selling. In A-Level Business, marketing is defined more broadly as the management process of identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer needs profitably. This article introduces the core meaning of marketing, its aims and the value it creates for both customers and businesses.

1. Defining Marketing |

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) defines marketing as ‘the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.’ This definition highlights three key actions: finding out what customers want, predicting future demand, and delivering a product or service in a way that earns profit.

Marketing is not a single department that only promotes products. It involves research, product design, pricing, distribution and communication, all coordinated to meet customer expectations and achieve business goals.

In the Cambridge syllabus, marketing is treated as an integrated business function rather than a standalone activity. That is why students need to understand both its theoretical principles and practical applications.

2. Marketing and Selling: Not the Same Thing |

Selling focuses on persuading customers to buy what the business has already produced. Marketing, by contrast, starts with the customer before production begins. A selling-oriented business asks, ‘How can we sell more of our product?’ A marketing-oriented business asks, ‘What do customers need and how can we satisfy that need better than rivals?’

The marketing approach is more sustainable because it aligns the business with changing customer preferences, reducing the risk of producing unwanted goods. Selling may generate short-term sales, but it cannot build lasting customer loyalty if the product does not match expectations.

3. Customer Needs, Wants and Demand |

A need is a basic requirement such as food, shelter or transport. A want is a specific preference shaped by culture, personality and marketing, for example wanting a particular brand of car rather than transport in general. Demand exists when a want is backed by the ability to pay.

Effective marketing does not create basic needs, but it can shape wants and influence demand by making products appealing, affordable and accessible. For example, a smartphone satisfies the need for communication, but marketing encourages the want for a specific brand with a better camera or design.

4. Market Orientation vs Product Orientation |

A market-oriented business continually collects information about customer needs, competitors and market trends, then adapts its products accordingly. A product-oriented business focuses on making high-quality goods or developing new technologies first, assuming customers will buy them because of their features or performance.

A tech firm launching advanced software without user testing

Most successful large businesses combine both orientations: they invest in innovation but use market research to reduce risk. A company can be product-led in its engineering culture while still listening to customer feedback before launch.

5. Marketing Objectives |

Marketing objectives are specific targets that help a business achieve its overall corporate objectives. Common marketing objectives include increasing market share, raising brand awareness, improving customer loyalty, entering new markets and launching new products.

Good marketing objectives should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. For example, ‘increase market share from 12% to 15% within 12 months’ is clearer than ‘become more popular.’

Setting clear objectives also allows managers to evaluate marketing performance. If a campaign does not meet its targets, the business can adjust its strategy or marketing mix.

6. The Marketing Mix: An Overview |

The marketing mix is the set of controllable decisions a business uses to influence customers. The traditional 4Ps are product, price, place and promotion. Product refers to the goods or services offered; price is the amount customers pay; place covers distribution channels and location; promotion includes advertising, sales promotions and public relations.

For services, three additional Ps are often added: people, process and physical evidence. This is called the 7Ps framework. These elements must be consistent, because a premium price will not work if the product quality or store environment is weak.

For example, a luxury hotel charges high prices, so its building, staff uniforms and service speed must all reinforce the premium image. A mismatch between the Ps confuses customers and weakens the brand.

7. Market Research and Segmentation |

Market research is the systematic collection and analysis of data about customers, competitors and market conditions. It can be primary research, such as surveys and interviews, or secondary research, such as government reports and industry publications.

After research, businesses often divide a market into segments based on factors such as age, income, lifestyle or location. They then select target segments and position the product to appeal to those customers specifically.

Segmentation helps a business use its limited marketing budget more efficiently. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, it can focus on the customers most likely to buy and most likely to be profitable.

8. Marketing and Added Value |

Added value is the difference between the cost of inputs and the price customers are willing to pay. Marketing increases added value by creating a strong brand, offering convenience, improving design and providing excellent customer service. Customers may pay more for the same basic product if they trust the brand and enjoy the buying experience.

However, marketing costs money, so the extra spending on promotion or packaging must be less than the extra revenue it generates. Otherwise, the marketing activity destroys value rather than creating it.

A useful exam point is to link marketing with the concept of competitive advantage. If marketing creates a brand difference that rivals cannot easily copy, the business can sustain higher prices over time.

9. Modern Marketing: Digital and Relationship Marketing |

Digital marketing uses websites, social media, search engines, email and mobile apps to reach customers. It allows precise targeting, real-time data and lower cost per contact compared with traditional media. Many A-Level exam questions expect students to discuss the opportunities and risks of e-commerce and social media marketing.

Relationship marketing focuses on retaining existing customers rather than constantly finding new ones. Loyal customers often buy more, cost less to serve and recommend the business to others. Tools such as loyalty cards, personalised offers and after-sales support help build long-term relationships.

Social media also allows direct interaction, so customer complaints can be handled quickly. However, a viral negative comment can damage brand reputation, so digital marketing requires careful monitoring and response planning.

10. Why Marketing Matters to Business |

Marketing helps a business understand where it fits in the market, who its customers are and how to compete effectively. Without marketing, even a technically excellent product may fail because customers do not know it exists or do not see why it is worth buying.

A well-planned marketing strategy reduces risk, supports growth and creates a clear link between customer satisfaction and long-term profitability. It is therefore a central function
