Invasive alien species (IAS) are among the greatest threats to global biodiversity, second only to habitat destruction. For CIE A-Level Biology, you need to understand how these species are introduced, and critically evaluate the range of strategies available to prevent and control their spread.

1. What Are Invasive Alien Species? | 什么是外来入侵物种?
An alien (non-native) species is one that has been transported by human activity to a region outside its natural range. An invasive alien species is a non-native species that establishes a population, spreads rapidly, and causes ecological, economic or health harm in its new habitat.

Not every non-native species becomes invasive – the ‘tens rule’ suggests that only about 10% of introduced species become established, and only 10% of those become invasive.

2. Why Do Invasive Species Cause Problems? | 外来入侵物种为何造成危害?
Invasive species harm ecosystems through multiple mechanisms. They compete with native species for food, light and space; they may prey on native organisms; they can introduce new diseases; and they can hybridise with native species, causing genetic pollution.

Invasive species often succeed because they lack natural predators, parasites or pathogens in their new habitat. This gives them a competitive advantage over native species that have co-evolved with local predators and diseases.

Economic impacts are also enormous: IAS cost the global economy hundreds of billions of dollars annually in crop losses, control expenses and infrastructure damage. In the UK alone, Japanese knotweed is estimated to cost over £150 million per year to manage.

3. Routes of Introduction | 入侵物种的引入途径
Introductions can be deliberate or accidental. Deliberate introductions include plants brought in for horticulture or agriculture (such as Japanese knotweed), animals imported as pets (such as the red-eared slider turtle), and species released as biological control agents that later attack non-target species.

Accidental introductions are equally important. Ballast water taken on board ships in one port and discharged in another transports marine organisms worldwide. 4. Prevention: The First Line of Defence | 预防:第一道防线
Prevention is the most cost-effective and environmentally sound strategy. Once an invasive species becomes established, eradication is often difficult or impossible. Customs inspections, quarantine regulations and import bans at national borders form the primary barrier to the entry of new alien species.

Legislation plays a key role. The UK’s Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (and the more recent Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019, implementing EU Regulation 1143/2014) makes it an offence to release or cause the spread of listed invasive species. Similar laws exist internationally, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Guiding Principles on Invasive Species.

5. Early Detection and Rapid Response | 早期监测与快速响应
When prevention fails, early detection is the next best option. A small, localised population is far easier to eradicate than a widespread one. Surveillance programmes monitor high-risk areas such as ports, airports, nature reserves and river systems for signs of new arrivals.

Citizen science contributes significantly: apps and websites allow members of the public to report sightings of suspected invasive species, which are then verified and investigated. 6. Physical Control | 物理防控
Physical (mechanical) control involves the direct removal or exclusion of invasive species. Techniques include hand-pulling or digging up plants, mowing or cutting, trapping or shooting animals, applying physical barriers (such as fences), dredging waterways, and burning.

Physical control has several advantages: it avoids chemical pollution, is selective (targeted at the invasive species) and is suitable for small or early-stage invasions. However, it is labour-intensive and expensive for large areas, and some methods may damage the habitat or disturb non-target species.

A single plant can produce thousands of seeds that remain viable for up to 20 years, so physical removal alone rarely achieves long-term control.
