Question papers are divided into short-answer, multiple-choice, calculation and extended-response items. The opening questions usually target straightforward recall: defining an isotope, identifying a bonding type, or reading a mass spectrum. Calculations such as titrations and enthalpy changes usually appear mid-paper, while the final extended-response questions demand justification, comparisons and evaluation of experimental data. Every atom is defined by three subatomic particles: the proton (+1 charge, relative mass 1), the neutron (0 charge, relative mass 1) and the electron (−1 charge, relative mass 1/1840). Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, hence the same atomic number but different mass numbers. Because isotopes have identical electronic configurations, they exhibit identical chemical properties but different physical properties such as density and rate of diffusion.

Questions on the January 2021 paper frequently required you to interpret a mass spectrum. The four stages of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer are: ionisation (electron impact removes an electron, or electrospray adds a proton), acceleration by an electric field, ion drift through a flight tube (lighter ions arrive sooner), and detection where the current produced is proportional to the abundance of each ion. The relative atomic mass Aᵣ is then calculated using the weighted mean of the isotopic masses.
