The January 2019 mark scheme for AQA AS Chemistry Unit 2 shows a clear pattern: examiners reward precise scientific vocabulary, balanced equations, and logical sequencing. Knowing how marks are distributed is just as important as knowing the chemistry itself.

1. Command Words Decide Your Marks | 指令词决定你的得分

Every question begins with a command word, and the mark scheme is built around it. ‘State’ expects a single fact with no explanation. ‘Define’ requires the exact specification wording. ‘Explain’ needs a reason, usually containing ‘because’. ‘Calculate’ gives full credit only when working is shown, even if the final number is wrong.

The mark scheme also uses codes: ‘allow’ means an alternative answer gets credit; ‘ignore’ means extra wrong information does not remove the mark; ‘do not accept’ lists mistakes that cancel credit. Error carried forward (ECF) means a later correct calculation can be credited even if your first step was wrong.

Thermochemistry questions in Unit 2 demand exact definitions. The mark scheme accepts ‘ΔH is negative’ for an exothermic reaction, but ‘heat is given out’ alone is insufficient because it does not connect to the enthalpy change. A correct definition of exothermic includes ‘products have less energy than reactants’ or ‘ΔH < 0'.

Missing ‘standard conditions’ loses the condition mark. In calorimetry, the mark scheme requires q = mcΔT, then ΔH = −q/n, with units kJ mol⁻¹. A common trap is leaving ΔH in J instead of kJ.

Hess’s law questions in the January 2019 mark scheme award marks in stages: one for constructing a valid cycle, one for the enthalpy equation, one for the arithmetic sign, and one for units. A correct cycle with an arithmetic slip still earns most of the marks because of ECF.

The Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution is a reliable source of marks if you label it correctly. The curve must start at the origin, not touch the energy axis at high energy, and the area under the curve equals the total number of particles. The mark scheme explicitly does not accept a curve that touches the x-axis.

麦克斯韦-玻尔兹曼分布图只要标注正确就是稳定的得分点。曲线必须从原点出发,在高能端不接触能量轴,曲线下面积等于粒子总数。评分标准明确不接受与x轴相交的曲线。

When temperature increases, the mark scheme wants two changes: the peak moves to the right and becomes lower, and the area under the curve stays the same because the number of particles is unchanged. The key conclusion is ‘more molecules have energy greater than or equal to the activation energy Eₐ’, which increases the rate of successful collisions.

当温度升高时,评分标准要求写出两点变化:峰值右移且降低,曲线下面积不变因为粒子总数不变。核心结论是’更多分子具有大于或等于活化能Eₐ的能量’,从而增加有效碰撞速率。


5. Collision Theory and Catalysts | 碰撞理论与催化剂

Collision theory questions require three precise ideas: particles must collide, the collision must have energy at least equal to the activation energy, and the particles must collide with the correct orientation. The mark scheme does not accept ‘more collisions’ on its own; you must write ‘more successful collisions per second’ or ‘greater collision frequency with sufficient energy’.

Catalysts lower the activation energy by providing an alternative pathway. On a Maxwell–Boltzmann diagram, the mark scheme expects the original curve unchanged, with a new vertical line for Eₐ drawn to the left of the original Eₐ. A catalyst increases the rate of both forward and reverse reactions equally, so it does not alter the equilibrium position.

The term ‘dynamic equilibrium’ earns a mark only when both halves are stated: ‘the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction’ and ‘the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant’. The mark scheme also requires ‘in a closed system’ for a full definition.

For Le Chatelier questions, the mark scheme separates the direction of shift from the reason. For example, increasing pressure shifts equilibrium to the side with fewer moles of gas; the reason is to oppose the increase in pressure. For temperature, if the forward reaction is exothermic, increasing temperature shifts equilibrium in the endothermic direction. A catalyst is not listed as a shift factor — it only speeds up the attainment of equilibrium.

Redox mark schemes require oxidation states written with both sign and number, e.g. ‘+2’, not ‘2’. Rules must be applied in order: elements have 0, monatomic ions equal their charge, oxygen is usually −2, hydrogen is usually +1, and the sum of oxidation states in a neutral compound is zero.

When balancing half equations, the mark scheme awards marks separately for balancing atoms and balancing charges. For example: Cl₂ + 2e⁻ → 2Cl⁻. In a full redox equation, the total electrons lost by the reducing agent must equal the total electrons gained by the oxidising agent. The most common lost mark is omitting state symbols on both sides, especially (aq) for ions or (g) for chlorine.

Group 2 questions in Unit 2 often ask for observations. For magnesium reacting with steam, the mark scheme wants ‘bright white flame’ and ‘white solid formed’; for reaction with dilute acid, ‘bubbles/effervescence’ and ‘magnesium dissolves’. Vague answers such as ‘it reacts’ earn zero.

Group 7 trends follow a fixed set of comparisons down the group: boiling point increases due to stronger London forces; electronegativity decreases due to larger atomic radius; oxidising ability decreases because the halide ion is larger and less able to gain an electron. Displacement reactions require the colours: chlorine displaces bromide to give an orange solution, and iodine gives a brown solution. The mark scheme accepts ‘pale green’ for chlorine and ‘purple’ for iodine in an organic solvent.
